Xavier Holds Basketball 101 For Women
Nov. 30, 2012
CINCINNATI - Xavier men's basketball and Head Coach Chris Mack held the annual Basketball 101 for Women event earlier this month. Close to 100 women attended the event at Cintas Center that was presented by Mattress Warehouse.
Upon arrival to Cintas Center, Basketball 101 attendees enjoyed drinks and hors d'oeuvres, before the group was welcomed by Beth Workman from Mattress Warehouse. The crowd was split into separate groups for a basketball workshop that included four interactive stations designed to give basketball enthusiasts and those new to the game an in-depth look inside the Xavier men's basketball program.
The first group enjoyed a behind-the-scenes tour led by Director of Basketball Operations Jeremy Growe and included a stop by the Musketeers' locker room, Kohlhepp Family auxiliary gym, and media room. Associate Head Athletic Trainer David Fluker also gave attendees a look inside Xavier's Sports Medicine area while Matt Jennings, Head Strength and Conditioning Coach, discussed his philosophy and gave the women a tour of the state-of-the-art strength facility.
The next station attendees enjoyed "Rules of the Game" with NCAA referee, Buddy Mayborg. Mayborg explained the role of an official during the game, rules changes and other points of emphasis for the 2012-13 season. As well as, answered attendees questions about officials hand signals, how to become an official, and the ranks within the officials' community.
The third station was with Assistant Coaches Ashley Howard and Travis Steele. The coaches led a discussion of how the team prepares for each opponent by reviewing the scouting report, and how players study details and tendencies of their opponent's play prior to game day.
The next session was with Coach Mack and took place on the Cintas Center playing floor. Coach Mack spoke about X's and O's and taught the group several plays and out-of-bounds sets that Xavier uses.
After completing the stations, the groups reconvened for a question and answer session with Coach Mack and his wife, Christi. Concluding the program, the Follett Xavier Bookstore held a fashion show to showcase many of the new gameday, casual, athletic wear for women, and youth wear styles that are now available.
At the conclusion of the event all attendees received a Xavier Basketball 101 gift bag that included several exclusive premium items including a commemorative t-shirt, tumbler, reusable bag, a Xavier purse holder ring, and a discount coupon for the Xavier Bookstore. One attendee also won a raffle drawing for a mattress and pillow set valued at over $450 courtesy of Mattress Warehouse.
