Men's Basketball Completes a 4-0 Season-Opening Homestand

CINCINNATI --- The Xavier Musketeers raised their record to 4-0 with an 86-68 win over Louisiana-Monroe on Thursday night at the Cintas Center. The win completed the sweep of Xavierís season-opening four-game homestand at its new on campus facility. The 4-0 start is Xavierís best since starting the 1997-98 season at 5-0.

Xavier jumped out to a 9-2 lead out of the gate against Louisiana-Monroe and extended that lead to as many as 17 points on two different occasions in the first half but the visitors battled back to within 11 points at 52-41 at halftime.

The Musketeer went ice cold from the floor early in the second half and ULM used the XU lapse to close within six points, 53-47, with 17:46 left in the game. Xavier dominated the next 10 minutes, outscoring the Indians 19-5 to take a commanding 72-52 lead with 8:53 left in the contest. ULM would get no closer than 15 points the rest of the way.

Sophomore forward/center David West led the Musketeers with a career-high and game-high 15 rebounds to go with a game-high 19 points. West hit 6-9 from the field. Junior forward Kevin Frey tied his career-high with 14 rebounds. Sophomore guard Lionel Chalmers had another big game, contributing 13 points, five assists and four steals.

"Iím happy we won," said Xavier head coach Skip Prosser. "I thought two guys did a great job on the boards for us. Now we need to get ready to play at (#23) Wisconsin in less than 48 hours."

Xavier visits 23rd-ranked Wisconsin on Saturday in a 1:00 p.m. (CST) start. The game at UW will be XUís third in five days. The Musketeers return home next Tuesday to host San Francisco at 7:30 p.m. at the Cintas Center.
