Xavier, 4-0 and ranked 12th in the Nov. 21 Associated Press Poll and ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll, led by as many as 36 points in the second half in its 70-56 win over Georgia on Friday night at Cintas Center. XU placed four players in double figures in scoring led by senior Kenny Frease with 12 points and nine rebounds and senior Tu Holloway with 12 points and four assists. Junior Travis Taylor recorded the first double-double of his Xavier career with 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
Xavier is playing the first of four straight games that will be broadcast on the ESPN family of networks. The ESPN family will broadcast eight of XU's next nine games.
Xavier, 8-4 on opponent home courts last season, is playing its first road game of the 2011-12 season.
Xavier is playing the second of two straight games against teams from the SEC. XU beat Georgia on Nov. 25. XU has now won eight of its last nine games against SEC teams since the 2008 season.
Xavier graduate student Andre Walker is a 2011 Vanderbilt graduate and played 84 games, starting 40 times, for the Commodores from 2007-08 through 2010-11.
Xavier has four players averaging in double figures in scoring through the first four games: junior Mark Lyons (17.8 ppg.), senior Tu Holloway (15.0 ppg.), freshman Dezmine Wells (10.5 ppg.) and senior Kenny Frease (10.3 ppg.).
Xavier junior Mark Lyons, a member of the 2011-12 preseason A-10 Second Team, leads Xavier in scoring at 17.8 ppg. after four games, while shooting 51.9 percent from the field, including 50.0 percent from three-point territory. He has also contributed 3.8 assists, 4.3 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game.
Xavier senior Tu Holloway scored a team-high tying 12 points in the Georgia win, giving him 1,283 career points and moving him into the top 25 among all-time Xavier career scoring leaders.
Xavier senior Kenny Frease has blocked 14 shots over the first four games (3.5 per game), including a career-high six blocks against IPFW on Nov. 15.
Xavier freshman Dezmine Wells has been a big hit in his first four games as a Musketeer, averaging 10.5 ppg.
Xavier is 4-0, equalling its best start so far under third-year head coach Chris Mack (also 4-0 in the 2010-11 season). Xavier has only had one better start over the past 14 seasons including this one. XU started the 2008-09 season at 9-0 before finishing 27-8 and reaching the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16.
Xavier made its sixth straight NCAA Tournament appearance in 2011, one of only 12 schools that can say that. Xavier has made 10 of the last 11 NCAA Tournaments.
Xavier has graduated each of the last 83 men's basketball players that have played as seniors, a streak which dates back to 1986.
