Xavier Falls In Road Opener At Ball State, 75-63
MUNCIE, IN --- Xavier, 3-1, suffered a 75-63 loss at Ball State on Tuesday night in the season opener for the Cardinals. Xavier trailed 28-20 with 7:22 left in the first half but a 9-0 run over the next two minutes gave XU the lead at 29-28 with 5:14 left before intermission.
The Musketeers extended their lead to four points, 40-36, at halftime. Sophomore guard Dedrick Finn (Newburgh, IN), who turned 20 years old on Tuesday, scored 12 of his team-high 15 points in that first half.
Ball State outscored XU 14-5 to open the second half, grabbing a 50-45 advantage. Then it was XU’s turn for an 11-5 spurt, which was started by a Finn three-pointer. XU took what proved to be its last lead of the game at 56-55 with 10:21 left. The cold-shooting Musketeers managed just seven points the rest of the game. After hitting 51.6 pecent in the first half, XU shot just 28.1 percent in the second half.
Junior Keith Jackson (Cincinnati) was the only Musketeer other than Finn to reach double figures, reaching the 10-point mark with tip-in in the closing seconds of the game.
The Ball State game saw the end of several streaks for the Musketeers. XU had entered the game with 18 straight regular season wins and eight straight road wins, while seniors Romain Sato (Central African Republic) and Lionel Chalmers (Albany, NY) saw their personal streaks of double-figure scoring games end at 20 and 11 respectively.
Xavier plays Indiana on Saturday in The Wooden Tradition at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The game will begin at 4 p.m. and will be televised on Fox Sports Net.
