CINCINNATI - The Xavier University men's and women's basketball teams got the 2009-10 season off to an exciting start at Musketeer Madness presented by Skyline Chili on Saturday, October 24 at Cintas Center. Over 5,000 fans took in the annual showcase and both teams put on a good show.

The event started off with a 3-point shooting contest, which included junior Special Jennings and sophomore Brad Redford, along with two students. Redford buried 20 3-pointers in one minute.

Following the 3-point shooting contest, the teams were introduced and then came the always exciting slam dunk contest. Freshman guard Mark Lyons got things started by jumping over teammate Joe Hughes and tomahawking one down on his first attempt. Sophomore Jordan Crawford was unable to get one down and then junior Jamel McLean converted on a 360.

However, the judging panel of Sister Rose Ann Fleming, Aaron Williams and the Blue Blob decided Mark Lyons' slam was the most impressive and he won the event. The women's team followed the dunk contest with a scrimmage against the male practice players. The women jumped out to a 9-2 lead and held on to win the 20-minute scrimmage by a 25-19 count.

Several men's basketball alumni were at Cintas Center on Saturday, including Aaron Williams, Anthony Myles, Sherwin Williams, Keith Jackson, Jamal Walker, Steve Gentry, Tyrice Walker, Maurice McAfee, Tom Compton, Gary Lumpkin, Richie Harris, J.D. Barnett, Darnell Williams, Larry Sykes, Dwayne Wilson, Steve Wolf, Joe Sunderman and Byron Larkin.

The men's team will play its first exhibition game on Tuesday, November 3 when the team welcomes Rollins College to Cintas Center for a 7:30 p.m. tip. The women's team will play its only exhibition contest on Saturday, November 7 when the team takes on Indianapolis. Game time is set for 2 p.m. at Cintas Center.
