Students of Xavier are among those involved in BRIDGES' Walk
Oct. 22, 2012
Cincinnati—Students, faculty, and staff from the University of Cincinnati and Xavier University are teaming up this fall to engage in community service and learning experiences that support the mission of the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center and celebrate the Cincinnati region’s excitement and passion for college basketball.
The Skyline Chili Crosstown Classic, which will bring the Xavier Musketeers and UC Bearcats to the basketball court for the 66th consecutive year, is scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 19, at U.S. Bank Arena. A portion of the proceeds from ticket sales will benefit the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center.
Leading up to the game, UC and XU are collaborating on events in conjunction with the Freedom Center. On October 27, 2012, a collaborative team of students from each school will participate in the BRIDGES
Walk for a Just Community. BRIDGES’ annual Walk is an inspiring event celebrating the rich ethnic and
cultural compilation of our region. The Walk is focused on promoting the value of diversity and the necessity of an inclusive community. All proceeds benefit the critical human relations and educational programs of BRIDGES for a Just Community. The walk/run is a certified 5K (3.2 mile), which will start and finish at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center.
On November 10, 2012, both universities will participate in a special UC-XU Day at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. Students, faculty, staff, alumni and community supporters are encouraged to visit the Freedom Center. Faculty, staff, alumni and community supporters sporting UC or XU spirit wear will receive a discount on admission; tickets for this special day will be $8 per person.
(payable at the door). UC and XU students with a valid school ID, will be admitted free. The day will feature a visit by mascots from both schools and displays about community engagement, collaboration and service at each school.
“UC-XU Day at the Freedom Center will be a great celebration of community by these two major academic institutions in Cincinnati, said Kim Robinson, executive director of the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. “The mission of the Freedom Center is to share the stories of courage, cooperation and perseverance from the days of the Underground Railroad to modern times. Sharing these stories with the men and women of UC and XU is an important opportunity to celebrate community pride and mutual respect. These are values that are core to both universities, The Freedom Center and to our Cincinnati region.”
“We are honored to partner with the Freedom Center on this year’s game,” said Xavier University President Michael Graham, S.J. “The Freedom Center’s mission is compatible with our goals as an institution of higher learning as well as our goals on the basketball court.”
“The University of Cincinnati and Xavier University have a long history of collaboration, and this is just the latest example,” said UC Interim President Santa J. Ono. “The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center is a tremendous asset for our nation and our community, and this collaboration provides a remarkable learning opportunity for our students.”
