Oct. 22, 2011
CINCINNATI -- Xavier fans got their first look at the 2011-12 Musketeer men's and women's basketball teams Saturday night at Muskteer Madness presented by Skyline Chili. The 2011 edition of Musketeer Madness was one of the most action-packed events in recent history.
A Fan Fest on the Cintas Center Plaza started the late afternoon activities off as fans got a chance to meet the teams, take some photos, get autographs and enjoy some food and games. A great crowd of 5,805 filled the arena and were treated to a light show as the No. 15 Xavier men's team and first-year head coach Amy Waugh's women's team were introduced.
The highlight of the night was the return of the ever-popular slam dunk contest. Freshman Dezmine Wells took home the dunk contest championship with a little help from junior Mark Lyons. Juniors Jeff Robinson and Travis Taylor also entertained the fans with their high-flying exploits, and Lyons made a cameo dunk over junior Isaiah Philmore.
Selected Xavier students got a chance to compete in a spot-shot competition with members of both the men's and women's squads.
Former Musketeer men's basketball greats CJ Anderson, Gary Lumpkin, Richie Harris, Ralph Lee, Steve Wolf, Byron Larkin and Joe Sunderman as well as former XU women's basketball stars Dee Dee Jarnigan, Michelle Miller and Kelly (Benintendi) Misleh were on hand to take in the event.
The Xavier women's basketball team tips-off the 2011-12 campaign with an exhibition against Indianapolis and No. 15 men's team will host Bellarmine in exhibition play November 5. The women's game will tip-off at 1 p.m. with the men's game beginning at 6 p.m. at Cintas Center.
