Men's Basketball Remains Undefeated With A Third Straight Win On Brazil Trip

Tijuca, Brazil --- The Xavier University men's basketball team used a big second half for the third straight game, defeating the Tijuca U22 Club 76-42 to stay undefeated at 3-0 on its Brazilian preseason exhibition trip.  Xavier plays its fourth and final game on Saturday against Flamengo.

Xavier controlled the first half behind nine points and five rebounds from sophomore Jalen Reynolds, taking a 34-27 halftime lead. Reynolds finished with game-highs of 16 points and eight rebounds.

Tijuca came out strong to start the second half, hitting three 3-pointers and another basket to fuel an 11-5 run that pulled the home team to within one point, 39-38, with 6:22 left in the third quarter.

That's when Xavier ramped up its defensive effort, holding Tijuca scoreless for over 11 minutes while finishing off a 23-0 run. When the run was finally over, XU held a commanding 24-point, 62-38, lead with 5:03 left in the game. Reynolds and freshman Trevon Bluiett each scored six points during the run, while freshman Edmond Sumner contributed five and sophomore Brandon Randolph had four.

In addition to Reynolds, three other Musketeers reached double figures in scoring with 10 points each: Bluiett, Randolph and junior Remy Abell.

Xavier won the rebounding battle 43-30, while shooting 46.6 percent from the field. XU held Tijuca to 25.5 percent shooting, including 23.1 percent in the second half.

Senior Matt Stainbrook saw his first action so far in Brazil, collecting four points and four rebounds in seven minutes of action.
