Men's Basketball Wins Opener In Brazil Handily Thanks To A Big Second Half

Rio De Janeiro, Brazil --- The Xavier University men's basketball team began their four-game exhibition tour in Brazil with a 99-68 win over the Flamengo Club on Tuesday night.
Five Musketeers scored in double figures, including a double-double from junior James Farr with 12 points and 14 rebounds. Freshman J.P. Macura led all XU scorers with 14 points, while fellow freshman Trevon Bluiett scored 12 to go with eight rebounds. Sophomores Brandon Randolph and Myles Davis also reached double figures with 10 points each.
The teams played four 10-minute quarters. Xavier jumped out to a 10-0 lead to start the game and led 25-10 after the first quarter. Flamengo closed the gap with a 25-13 second quarter and the two teams went to halftime with XU leading 38-35 thanks in great part to 19 first-half XU turnovers.
Xavier came out strong in the second half, dominating the third quarter 38-18. In fact, Xavier outscored Flamengo 61-33 in the second half, shooting 53.7 percent from the field and turning the ball over only eight times. Farr hit all five of his shots from the field in the second half, while sophomore Jalen Reynolds scored all eight of his points after the break. For the game, Reynolds added 13 rebounds, three blocks and four steals.
Xavier dominated the rebounding 60-24, including a 23-5 advantage in offensive rebounds.
Xavier plays its second game tomorrow night against Macae.
