West A Top Candidate For Wooden Award
CINCINNATI --- Xavier junior center David West (Garner, N.C./Garner) has been named as a Top 50 Preseason Candidate for the 2001-2002 Wooden Award All-American Team. A national poll was conducted of the John R. Wooden Award Preseason Committee to determine the Top 50 candidates.
West, last year’s Atlantic 10 Player-of-the-Year, was an Associated Press All-America Honorable mention in 2000-01 and has been named a Playboy All-American for this coming season. He was a finalist for USA Basketball’s World Championship for Young Men Team this summer before having to withdraw with an injury.
Last season West led Xavier with 17.8 points and 10.9 rebounds per game while shooting 55.1 percent from the field. West led Xavier and was second in the nation with 20 double-doubles as a sophomore, including 18 in the final 23 games of the season. He was also named to the A-10 All-Defensive Team after blocking a school record 61 shots last season.
West is the first Xavier player to be named to preseason list of candidates for the Wooden award since James Posey, now of the Denver Nuggets, in 1998-99. In 1997-98 Xavier guard Lenny Brown was one of the 25 players to make the final ballot for the award and in 1993-94 Musketeer forward Brian Grant, now of the Miami Heat, was in the Top 50 players considered for the award.
Three other Atlantic 10 players were listed with West as a candidate for this year’s award. Lynn Greer from Temple joined Jameer Nelson and Marvin O’Connor from St. Joseph’s on the Top 50 list.
