Tu Holloway named Atlantic 10 Player of the Year and Chris Mack Named A-10 Coach of the Year

CINCINNATI - The Atlantic 10 Conference announced today that junior All-America candidate Tu Holloway has been named 2010-11 Atlantic 10 Conference Player of the Year and a member of the A-10 All-Defensive Team by the A-10 coaches. Head coach Chris Mack earned the A-10 Coach of the Year Award, while senior Jamel McLean and sophomore Mark Lyons earned spots on the A-10 Third Team and junior Kenny Frease earned A-10 Honorable Mention honors.

Holloway is second in the Atlantic 10 Conference in scoring at 20.1 ppg., in assists at 5.5 apg. and free throw percentage at 86.7 percent. Holloway is the second Xavier player to earn the honor since XU joined the Atlantic 10 Conference for the 1995-96 season. 2003 National Player of the Year and two-time NBA All-Star David West won the award an A-10 record three straight years (2001, 2002 and 2003).

Xavier second-year head coach Chris Mack has been named 2010-11 Atlantic 10 Conference Coach of the Year by his fellow A-10 coaches. Mack is the third XU head coach to win the award. Sean Miller won the award in 2008. Thad Matta won the award in 2002. The 2002 season marked the only other time until this year that Xavier had swept the Atlantic 10 Conference Player and Coach of the Year Awards. David West was the 2002 A-10 Player of the Year.

McLean leads Xavier and is ranked second in the Atlantic 10 Conference in rebounding at 8.5 rpg. to go with 10.8 ppg. Lyons is second on the team and 14th in the Atlantic 10 in scoring at 13.8 ppg. Frease is third on the team in scoring at 11.9 ppg. and second on the team and 10th in the Atlantic 10 in rebounding at 7.2 rpg.


 

 

No. 23 Xavier, 24-6 overall and Atlantic 10 Conference Regular Season Champion at 15-1, has won nine straight games and 16 of its last 17 games. The nine-game winning streak is the longest in two seasons under Mack and the longest XU streak since XU won 11 straight games in the 2008-09 season.

No. 1 seed Xavier plays its first Atlantic 10 Championship Game on Friday at noon in Atlantic City, N.J. XU takes on the winner of tomorrow's Dayton at Massachusetts game.
