Xavier clinches a bye in the first round of the 2012 Atlantic 10 Championship (March 9-11 in Atlantic City, N.J.) if it beats Charlotte. XU will be the No. 4 seed with a win and a St. Bonaventure win at La Salle. XU will be No. 3 if St. Bona loses at La Salle.
Xavier is second in the Atlantic 10 in overall field-goal percentage defense (.398).
Xavier senior All-American Tu Holloway leads the team in scoring at 16.4 ppg. (fifth in the Atlantic 10 Conference). Holloway also leads the team in assists at 5.6 apg. (fourth in the A-10). Holloway is the only A-10 player in the top five in the league in both scoring and assists. He also leads the team in steals (eighth in the A-10 at 1.6 spg.) and free throw percentage (third in the A-10 at .863).
Xavier's Tu Holloway is third on XU's all-time assist list with 534 assists and has dished off 100 or more assists and led the team in three straight seasons. Holloway is 11th on XU's all-time scoring list with 1,682 career points and is just eight shy of the top 10 (Nick Daniels is 10th with 1,690 from 1975-79).
Xavier senior Kenny Frease is fourth on the team in scoring at 9.0 ppg. He leads the team in rebounding and is 15th in the Atlantic 10 Conference at 6.0 rpg., including his 19-point, 14-rebound game in the win over Richmond on Feb. 25. In addition, Frease has raised his career point total to 999 points and is just one point shy of becoming the 50th member of the XU 1,000 Point Club.
Xavier junior Mark Lyons is second on the team in scoring (ninth in the A-10) at 15.9 ppg. Lyons, who now has 1,110 career points, is 33rd on XU's all-time scoring list.
Xavier freshman Dezmine Wells, a preseason A-10 All-Rookie selection and this week's Atlantic 10 Conference Rookie of the Week, is third on the team in scoring at 10.2 ppg. and in rebounding at 5.2 rpg. He had career-high scoring games with 19 points at Massachusetts on Feb. 21 and at Memphis on Feb. 4.
Xavier's Dezmine Wells had 13 points and 10 rebounds at Saint Louis on Tuesday, marking the first double-double by an XU freshman since Romain Sato in the 2000-01 season. In addition, his dunk in the opener vs. Morgan State made the list of eight finalists for ESPN2's Dunks of the Year show that will air March 26.
Xavier made its sixth straight NCAA Tournament appearance in 2011, one of only 12 schools that can say that. Xavier has made 10 of the last 11 NCAA Tournaments.
Xavier has graduated each of the last 83 men's basketball players that have played as seniors, a streak which dates back to 1986.
