Xavier To Honor Former Head Coach Bob Staak And The 1984 NIT Quarterfinalist Team

Feb. 27, 2014

CINCINNATI - This weekend Xavier will honor the 30-year anniversary of the 1984 men's basketball team that reached the National Invitation Tournament Quarterfinals. The 1984 team will be recognized for their feats on the court during a media timeout during the Xavier vs. Creighton game at Cintas Center, scheduled for 5 p.m. on Sat., Mar. 1.

The 1984 team, under the direction of head coach Bob Staak, had a starting lineup of seniors Dexter Bailey, John Shimko, Jeff Jenkins and Victor Fleming and sophomore Ralph Lee. Richie Harris, Walt McBride, Steve Drew and Leroy Greenidge were among the key reserves on that team.

The 1984 Musketeers took down Ohio State, 60-57, in overtime in the first round and defeated Nebraska, 58-57, in the second round in front of packed houses at Cincinnati Gardens. While XU did lose at Michigan, 63-62, in the quarterfinals, that season is recognized as one of the key times in the growth of Xavier's basketball program.

All four of the senior starters were drafted in the first 10 rounds of the 1984 NBA Draft, including Fleming in the second round with the 26th overall selection by the Portland Trailblazers.
