CINCINNATI -- Xavier men's basketball senior Tu Holloway was named Atlantic 10 Co-Player of the Week Monday after a 32-point performance in Xavier's 86-83 overtime victory over rival Dayton Saturday night. Holloway shared the weekly honor with St. Bonaventure senior Andrew Nicholson.
Holloway, who was the unanimous selection by the media as the Blackburn/McCafferty Game MVP in the win over Dayton, led Xavier with 32 points, six rebounds, five assists, and two steals. Holloway grabbed the lead back for XU at 75-73 with 11 seconds left in the second half on an old-fashioned 3-point play. UD tied the score at 75-all with two seconds left to send the game to overtime. Holloway took over and scored XU's final seven points in overtime (7 of the 11 in overtime), including a deep turnaround 3-pointer and four clutch free throws. His 32 points were just one point shy of a career-high.
Holloway is third on XU's all-time assist list with 518 assists and has dished off 100 or more assists in three straight seasons. The senior point guard is 11th on XU's all-time scoring list with 1,652 career points and is 38 shy of 10th place, which is currently held by former Musketeer Nick Daniels (1975-79) with 1,690. Holloway has hit 623 career free throws, which is 39 free throws shy of the school record set by 2003 National Player of the Year David West (1999-2003). He already holds the XU and Atlantic 10 single-season free-throws-made record, which he set last season. His career free throw percentage of 85.1 percent is on pace to break the school record also.
Xavier returns to action Tuesday as they travel to face Atlantic 10 foe UMass. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. from Amherst Mass.
