Xavier Comes From Behind to Win at Richmond
RICHMOND, VA --- The Xavier University Musketeers, 17-3 overall and 9-0 in the Atlantic 10 Conference, extended the nationís second-longest active winning streak to 12 games with a 67-64 come-from-behind win at Richmond on Saturday.
Richmond controlled the first half thanks to 59.3 percent shooting from the field before intermission. The Spiders led 44-33 at halftime and by the 15:54 mark of the second half they were up by 16 points, 54-38.
Richmond still led by 15 points, 60-45, with 11:58 left before Xavier turned up the heat on both ends of the court. XU outscored the home team 19-2 over the next ten minutes of action, taking its first lead of the second half and taking it for good at 64-62 on a layup by junior forward David West (Garner, N.C.) off a nice pass inside by freshman guard Jaison Williams (Aurora, Co.).
Sophomore guard Romain Sato (Central African Republic) tied for team-high scoring honors with 19 points, while grabbing six rebounds. It marked the seventh time Sato has led the team in scoring in nine A-10 games. Sato scored XUís final eight points of the first and first four points of the second half, while trying to keep the Musketeers close enough for a second half surge. West also scored 19 points for the Musketeers, while grabbing a game-high 13 rebounds. It marked West's 41st career "double-double", including his 11th this season.
While Sato and West were big heroes in tonightís game, it was the play of two freshmen that made a big difference in the second half. All of Williamsí five minutes came at the end of the game and he made the most of them.
Xavier travels to St. Bonaventure next Saturday for a 7:00 game. The game will be broadcast on WB64 in Cincinnati
