Xavier, 11-6 overall and 4-0 in the Atlantic 10 Conference, won its fourth straight game with a 70-63 victory over La Salle on Saturday in a game that was not as close at the end as the final score. XU led by 18 points with a few minutes left before emptying the bench. Freshman Semaj Christon led Xavier with 18 points and five assists.
Xavier is second in the Atlantic 10 in field goal percentage defense (.403), 3-point field goal percentage defense (.303), and scoring defense (60.7 ppg.).
Xavier is playing the first of two straight road games, four out of five on the road and six out of eight on the road.
Xavier freshman Semaj Christon won his fourth Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week award (second straight) after scoring 18.5 ppg. to go with 7.5 apg. and 2.0 spg. in wins at St. Bonaventure and vs. La Salle this past week. Christon leads XU in scoring (12th overall and first among freshmen in the A-10 at 14.7 ppg.), assists (third overall and first among freshmen in the A-10 at 5.1 apg.) and steals (13th in the A-10 at 1.5 spg.).
Xavier senior Brad Redford scored 13 points against La Salle, the first time in his career he has scored in double figures in three straight games. Redford, who is second in the A-10 in 3-point percentage (.466) for all games , has averaged 15.0 ppg. in A-10 play so far (second on the team and 11th in the A-10 for conference games only).
Xavier senior Travis Taylor is XU's rebound leader at 8.0 rpg. (fourth in Atlantic 10), while standing second in scoring at 11.2 ppg. He is averaging 10.0 rpg. in A-10 play.
Xavier sophomore Justin Martin, who is fifth on the team in scoring (8.3 ppg.) and third in rebounding (4.8 rpg.), has recorded nine double-figure scoring games.
Xavier sophomore Dee Davis returned to the lineup against La Salle after missing two games with a wrist injury and contributed seven assists and only one turnover. Davis is third on the team in scoring (9.3 ppg.) and second in assists (3.9 apg.).
Xavier fourth-year head coach Chris Mack is 84-36 (.700) overall and 43-9 (.827) in A-10 regular season play as Xavier's head coach. Mack led Xavier to the NCAA Tournament in each of his first three seasons, including the NCAA Sweet 16 in 2010 and 2012.
Xavier is one of only four teams that have made the NCAA Sweet 16 four times in the last five years (2008-12): Kansas, Michigan State, North Carolina and Xavier. No team has made all of the last five Sweet 16s. Xavier is one of only eight schools that have made at least the last seven straight NCAA Tournaments.
Xavier is ranked 11th in the nation in the latest NCAA Graduation Success Rate at 97 percent. Xavier men's basketball was among 14 XU programs at 100 percent.
Xavier has graduated each of the last 88 men's basketball players that have played as seniors, a streak which dates back to 1986.
