Senior Guard Maurice McAfee Stars as Xavier Wins Atlantic 10 Opener
BRONX, NY --- The Xavier University Musketeers, 10-2 overall and 1-0 in the Atlantic 10 Conference, won their fifth straight game with an impressive 82-71 win at Fordham on Wednesday night in the A-10 opener for both schools. The loss dropped Fordham to 7-5 overall and 0-1 in the A-10.
Fordham led after two minutes 6-3. It was all Xavier after that, especially in the first half. XU dominated the first half, leading by as many as 20 points and going into the locker room at intermission with a 17-point, 49-32, lead. Senior guard Maurice McAfee helped XU shred the Fordham zone early as he connected on 5-of-6 three-pointers in the first half on his way to 21 first-half points. McAfee finished the game with 26 points, just one shy of his career high, to go with six assists and just one turnover.
“We got off to a great start shooting the ball against the zone, especially Moe (Maurice McAfee),” said head coach Skip Prosser. “We felt he was due for a breakout game.” Fordham did make a couple of second half runs but never got any closer than 10 points in the second half.
Balanced scoring was again a key for the Musketeers, who placed five players in double figures in scoring. XU is now 10-0 this season when it has at least three double-figure scorers. First-year sophomore guard Lionel Chalmers scored 15 points, while junior forward Kevin Frey chipped in with 13 points and a team-high 10 rebounds.
“In the first half we played as well as we have played in a half this season,” said Prosser. “This is a great road win and a road win is a great way to start the conference season.”
Xavier opens the home portion of its Atlantic 10 schedule on Sunday against La Salle at 2:00 p.m. at XU’s Cintas Center.
