CINCINNATI - Four Musketeers scored in double-figures and the Xavier University men's basketball team used a 15-0 second half run to down Southern 73-56 on Thursday evening in front of a sellout crowd of 10,250 at Cintas Center. With the win, XU improves to 7-2 on the campaign while Southern slips to 1-9.

Xavier was unable to shake Southern in the early stages of the second half as the Jaguars trailed 50-45 with 12:10 remaining on the strength of a 9-2 run.

However, the Musketeers put the clamps down defensively and seized control of the contest with a 15-0 run over the next 6:10 to take a commanding 65-45 lead at the six-minute mark.

Southern would hang around but Xavier scored the final four points of the game to take home a 73-56 victory.

Senior forward Brian Thornton led the XU scoring attack with 14 points. Sophomore guard Stanley Burrell scored 11 points and dished-out five assists. Sophomore Josh Duncan and junior Justin Cage each scored 10 points on the night.

Cage also snared seven rebounds.

Junior forward Justin Doellman chipped in with eight points and a game-high nine rebounds. Senior guard Dedrick Finn was solid at the point, dropping seven dimes while committing only a pair of turnovers.

Freshman guard Johnny Wolf tied a career high with eight points and was 2-for-3 from beyond the 3-point arc.

Xavier was crisp offensively, as 18 of its 23 field goals came via the assist. XU also established a season best by committing only 10 turnovers on the night.

Xavier also won the battle of the boards 41-to-33 while the XU bench outscored the Southern reserves by a 30-to-5 margin.

The Musketeers were cold from the field, hitting on only 38.3 percent (23-for-60) of their field goal attempts. The Jaguars were equally chilly though hitting on 38.2 percent (21-for-55) of their attempts from the floor.

The Musketeers stumbled out of the gate and fell behind by nine points on two occasions, the last coming at 12:20 when the Jaguars took a 22-13 lead on a Peter Cipriano lay-up.

Xavier would whittle the Southern lead to six points, 27-21, at the 7:20 mark but charged out to a 14-0 run over the next 5:10 and seized a 35-27 edge. Duncan capped off the XU spurt with a 3-pointer from the wing.

Southern would score the final four points of the first stanza and the Musketeers took a 35-31 lead into the locker room.

XU will return to action on Wednesday, January 4 when the team opens up Atlantic 10 Conference play at Saint Joseph's. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m. at Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse in Philadelphia and the contest will be televised regionally by FSN Ohio.
