CINCINNATI - Senior forward Justin Doellman scored 19 points to lead three Musketeers in double-figures as the Xavier University men's basketball team defeated Arizona State, 76-58, on Saturday evening at Cintas Center. With the win, Xavier snaps its two game losing skid and improves to 8-3 on the year. The Sun Devils slip to 4-4.
Doellman's 19 came on 7-of-12 shooting and the Union, Ky. native also blocked three shots and recorded three steals. Classmate Justin Cage scored a season-high 17 points and snared seven boards. Cage was also 8-for-9 from the free throw line.
Junior guard Stanley Burrell added 12 points for the Musketeers. Sophomore guard Johnny Wolf was rock solid for 15 minutes at the point, scoring eight points and dishing-out five assists while not committing a single turnover.
XU led 38-26 at the half and maintained that edge, 57-45, until ASU mounted an 11-2 run and closed to 61-56 with 6:10 left in regulation.
That was as close as ASU would get though as Xavier put the Sun Devils away with an 8-0 run over the next two minutes to take a 69-56 advantage just prior to the final media timeout.
XU took care of business from the charity stripe, connecting on 23-of-26 (88.5 percent) from the free throw line. Xavier also won the battle of the boards by a 33-to-29 margin and held a 25-to-17 edge on the defensive glass.
Xavier will return to action on Wednesday, December 20 when the team takes on back-to-back Patriot League Champion Bucknell. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Cintas Center.
