CINCINNATI - Xavier topped Cincinnati 64-47 in the Skyline Chili Crosstown Classic Saturday night at U.S. Bank Arena. Justin Martin's season-high 17 points gave the Musketeers the victory, who improve to 8-3 while the Bearcats fall to 7-2.
Sophomore Semaj Christon scored the game's opening points in transition after a Martin steal. The Musketeers quickly jumped out to an 11-4 lead from a trio of three-pointers from Dee Davis, Martin and James Farr. Later in the half, Xavier went on a 13-2 run from back-to-back threes made by Martin again and freshman Myles Davis. After a few buckets by the Bearcats, the Musketeers went on another big run, this time scoring 13 to Cincinnati's two. During that run, Martin made four straight four shots after a technical on the Bearcats to give XU a 19-point lead. Xavier took a 41-25 lead into the locker room.
Xavier shot 60 percent (6-of-10) from behind the arc in the first half, which is a season high. The team's 41 points is the most Cincinnati has allowed in any half this season.
Cincinnati cut Xavier's lead to 10 points with 13:24 remaining in the second half, but that was as close as they would come. Xavier's hot shooting continued, as the Musketeers went on an 11-0 run due to a three-pointer by Randolph and two treys from Christon. XU hit five of seven three-pointers in the second half. The defense was also strong, as the team held Cincinnati to only four points over a span of 9:29. Xavier's large lead would hold for the rest of the game, as the Musketeers finished with a 64-47 victory.
Martin made 3-of-5 (60 percent) from beyond the arc and he also had five rebounds and two assists. Sophomore James Farr had 10 points, shooting 2-of-2 from the perimeter. Farr also grabbed six boards for the Musketeers.
Other big contributors for the Musketeers were Christon, Matt Stainbrook, and Brandon Randolph. Christon added eight points, two rebounds and two assists. Matt Stainbrook was three points shy of back-to-back double-doubles. He finished with seven points, 11 rebounds and two assists. Randolph had eight points, four rebounds and one assist, making 2-of-3 from behind the arc.
Xavier's final stat line consisted of a 56.4 field goal percentage (22-of-39). The Musketeers also made 11-of-16 (68.8 percent) from beyond the arc, a season high for both three-point field goal percentage and three-point field goals made. It is the most threes made since the team hit 13 last season versus Fairleigh Dickinson. Cincinnati was held to a 33.3 field goal percentage (14-of-42). XU also dominated on the boards, winning the rebounding battle 33-20. The Musketeers had 16 assists on 22 made shots.
