Terrell Holloway scored a career-high 26 points to lead Xavier (6-3) to an 83-79 double-overtime victory over Cincinnati (6-2) in the 77th edition of the Skyline Chili Crosstown Shootout. Jordan Crawford added 16 points and Mark Lyons chipped in 11. Jason Love grabbed a career-high-tying 19 rebounds and Holloway dished out 4 assists. Cincinnati was led by Lance Stephenson who scored a career-high 22 points, followed by Yancy Gates with 18 points, and Deonta Vaughn with 13. Vaughn grabbed a career-high nine rebounds and Cashmere Wright dished out four assists.
The last time the Skyline Chili Crosstown Shootout went into overtime was January 19, 2006, when XU defeated Cincinnati, 73-71, at Cintas Center. This was the sixth time the game has gone into overtime, with XU holding a 5-1 advantage in overtime contests. This was the first time the game has gone into double overtime.
Xavier’s last overtime game was against Virginia Tech on November 21, 2008, in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off. XU won that game 63-62 on a Dante Jackson buzzer-beater from half court. XU’s last game with multiple overtimes came against UMass on January 8, 2005, when the Musketeers lost in triple overtime, 90-86. Cincinnati last overtime game came against Gonzaga on November 25, 2009. The Bearcats lost that game 61-59. Cincinnati’s last multiple overtime game was against Northern Iowa on November 24, 2004. The Bearcats won that game 76-70.
Xavier has won three straight, six of eight, and eight of the last 11 meetings in the series with Cincinnati.
Xavier extended its home winning streak to 14 games. Xavier, playing in its 10th season at Cintas Center, is 124-17 (.880) all-time at its on-campus arena. XU is 62-7 (.900) against non-conference foes during the 10-year stretch.
Xavier had a season-high 11 blocked shots. The previous high was eight blocks against Kent State (12-4-09).
Terrell Holloway scored a career-high 26 points, which also matched the season-high performance by a Musketeer. His previous high was 16 points at Duquesne (2-7-09). He also established a career high in free throws made with 11. His previous high was 10 against Memphis (11-23-08) and Missouri (11-20-08), both at the Puerto Rico Tipo-Off. When XU fell behind 72-67 with 56 seconds remaining in the first overtime, Holloway scored seven straight points, including a three-point play with 19 seconds left, to tie the game at 74-all and send it to a second overtime.
Jason Love tied his career high with 19 rebounds. He also grabbed 19 boards against Marquette at the Old Spice Classic (11-26-09). This was the fifth game in which he finished with double-digit rebounding totals. The 19 rebounds were also the second most by any player at Cintas Center. David West holds the arena record with 21 boards against George Washington on February 3, 2001. Love also tied his career high with five blocked shots. He also had five blocks against Marquette at the Old Spice Classic and against Dayton (3-5-09).
Lance Stephenson scored a career-high 22 points. His previous high was 17 points against Miami (OH) (12-10-09).
Deonta Vaughn grabbed a career-high nine rebounds. His previous high was seven boards against Gonzaga (11-25-09).
Trailing 4-3 at 18:22 of the first half, XU went on a 9-1 run to take a 12-5 lead at 14:34. Jordan Crawford scored 4 points during the spurt.
Trailing 12-5 at 14:34 of the first half, UC went on 14-0 run to take a 19-12 lead at 7:41. Darnell Wilks hit a pair of three-pointers to pace the Bearcats.
Trailing 19-12 at 7:49 of the first half, XU went on a 12-2 run to take a 24-21 lead at 3:55. Terrell Holloway led the Musketeers with 6 points.
Trailing 51-44 at 10:21 of the second half, UC went on an 11-0 run to take a 55-51 lead at 5:45. Lance Stephenson scored 7 points during the run.
Up Next: Xavier returns to action next Saturday, December 19, as the Musketeers travel to Indianapolis to face the Butler Bulldogs at Hinkle Fieldhouse at 2:00 p.m. XU leads the all-time series with Butler, 28-15, but saw a seven-game winning streak against the Bulldogs stopped last year as Butler downed the Musketeers at Cintas Center, 74-65, on December 23. In that game, Butler’s Gordon Heyward (19 points, 10 rebounds) and Matt Howard (19 points, 14 rebounds) recorded double-doubles. XU was led by Derrick Brown who scored 17 points and C.J. Anderson who added 15.
