Mark Lyons scored 19 points and Tu Holloway added 17 as #8 Xavier (8-0) defeated Cincinnati, 76-53, in a game that was called by the officials with 9.4 seconds remaining. Dezmine Wells added 14 points and Kenny Frease scored 13. Frease grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds and Holloway had 6 assists. Cincinnati was led by Yancy Gates with 18 points, Dion Dixon added 15, and Sean Kilpatrick chipped in 11. Gates had 12 rebounds and Dixon had 4 assists.
With today's victory, XU has now won four of the last five and seven of the last 10 games against Cincinnati. UC still leads the series, 48-31.
Xavier is now 155-18 (.896) all-time at Cintas Center and 77-8 (.906) against non-conference opponents since moving into it on-campus arena for the 2000-01 season. XU currently has a 14-game winning streak at home dating back to the 2010-11 season.
Xavier's 8-0 start is the best in the Chris Mack era, and the best start by an XU squad since beginning the 2008-09 season at 9-0. The Musketeers finished that season 27-8, reaching the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16.
The 23-point margin of victory in today's game was the largest by XU in the series since the Musketeers defeated the Bearcats, 88-62, on January 9, 1957 at Cincinnati Gardens. The largest margin of victory in the series was 30 points when UC defeated Xavier, 102-72, at Cincinnati Gardens (3-3-65).
Xavier held Cincinnati to just 27.9 percent shooting (17-for-61), the lowest by an opponent since holding Rhode Island to 24.6 percent (14-for-57) on January 9, 2011. The 53 points by UC were the fewest points scored by a Xavier opponent since that same game, when the Rams could muster just 45 points.
Senior All-American Tu Holloway is 20th on XU's all-time scoring list with 1,361 career points. His next target in the 19th position is Jeff Jenkins (1980-84), who scored 1,384 points during his Xavier career.
Kenny Frease recorded his first double-double of the season with 13 points and 13 rebounds. It was his eighth career double-double, his last coming at St. Louis (3-5-11) when he scored 10 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Frease also had 4 blocks, giving him 19 for the season.
Mark Lyons scored a game-high 19 points, and is now averaging 17.4 ppg. and is shooting 50.5 percent (50-for-99) from the field and 43.3 percent (13-for-30) from behind the 3-point arc.
All-American Tu Holloway scored 17 points on 5-of-10 shooting (1-for-5 from 3-point range) and 6-for-6 shooting from the free throw line. He is now shooting 87.5 percent (56-for-64) in seven games this season from the free throw line.
Cincinnati's Yancy Gates recorded his fourth double-double of the season and 17th of his career with 18 points and 12 boards.
Trailing 9-5 at 13:42, XU went on an 8-0 run to take a 13-9 lead at 10:27. Mark Lyons scored 4 points during the spurt.
Trailing 23-22 at 5:45, XU went on a 12-2 run to take a 34-25 lead into the half. Xavier extended the run to 17-2 early in the second half to take a 39-25 advantage at 19:06. Tu Holloway scored 6 points and Mark Lyons added 5 points during the stretch.
Up Next: Xavier welcomes Oral Roberts to Cintas Center on Sunday, December 18, for a 1 p.m. contest. Xavier leads the all-time series with the Golden Eagles, 10-7, but the teams have not met since the 1986-87 season when both teams were still in the Midwestern Collegiate Conference. In the last meeting, on February 21, 1987, XU defeated Oral Roberts, 81-73, in double overtime at Cincinnati Gardens.
