Leading 33-27 at halftime, Xavier scored the first seven points of the second half to take a 40-27 lead with 17:08 to go in regulation.  Travis Taylor scored all seven points.

Then, trailing 43-30 at the 15:21 mark, Vanderbilt responded with its own 10-0 run to cut the Musketeers’ lead to 43-40 with 11:51 left in regulation.  Four Commodores scored during the spurt.

Xavier responded with two baskets by Semaj Christon to stretch its lead back to seven, 47-40, at the 10:45 mark.  But the Commodores answered with seven-straight points, to tie the game 47-47 with 8:39 remaining.  Then, trailing 54-49 with 5:21 left in the second half, Vanderbilt went on a 7-0 run to send the game into overtime and take a 56-54 with 4:24 remaining in the overtime period.

Xavier had won all five of its previous games against Vanderbilt, the most recent coming at Vanderbilt’s Memorial Gymnasium in Nashville last November 28, 82-70, also in overtime.

Vanderbilt snapped the Musketeers’ seven-game home win streak.  The Musketeers last lost at Cintas Center on January 25, 2012, 73-68, to Saint Louis.  The Musketeers are now 165-22 (.882) all time in 13 seasons at Cintas Center, and 80-11 (.879) against non-conference opponents.

Xavier last played an overtime game last season at Cintas Center on February 18, an 86-83 win over the Dayton Flyers.

Vanderbilt’s Kyle Fuller led all scorers with 25 points, a career high.  His previous career high, 17 points, came this season at Oregon on November 16.  He scored all 12 of Vanderbilt’s overtime points.

Isaiah Philmore scored 11 points and pulled down 10 rebounds (six on the offensive glass), both career highs at Xavier, for his first double-double at Xavier.  Philmore’s previous scoring high as a Musketeer was 10 against Drake in the Anaheim Classic on November 25, 2012.  His previous Xavier high in rebounds was seven at Purdue on December 1.

With 13 points tonight Justin Martin has scored at least ten points in all eight games this season, the only Musketeer to do so.

Next up for Xavier are the Kent State University Golden Flashes on Sunday, December 9, at 4:00.  The Musketeers lead the all-time series with Kent State 12-4.  The two schools met most recently on December 4, 2009, at Cintas Center, with Xavier prevailing 77-61.
