CINCINNATI - Four Musketeers scored in double-figures and senior forward Justin Doellman netted his 1000th career point as the Xavier University men's basketball team trounced Western Carolina by a 95-61 count on Saturday afternoon at Cintas Center. With the win XU improves to 6-1 for the first time since the 1997-98 season while the Catamounts slip to 4-2.
Doellman led the way with 18 points on 6-of-11 shooting. He also snatched eight rebounds on the night. Junior forward Josh Duncan and sophomore guard Johnny Wolf each scored 11 points. Wolf was 4-of-5 from the field including 3-of-4 from long-range and also dropped a career-high seven dimes.
Senior forward Justin Cage notched his third career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Cage was 3-for-3 from the field and made all four of his attempts from the charity stripe. Freshman forward Derrick Brown had another solid night, posting eight points on 3-of-3 shooting while snaring nine rebounds.
The Musketeers built a 46-29 halftime lead and quickly squelched any hope of a Catamount comeback, charging out to an 11-2 run to begin the second session. Duncan keyed the run with six points in the first 2:30 of the second half and Doellman capped the run with a 3-pointer, giving XU an insurmountable 57-31 lead at the 16:20 mark.
XU used a pair of 10-2 run over the course of the second half to take its largest lead, 95-58, after Adrion Graves drilled a 3-pointer with under a minute to go.
The Musketeers scorched the nets at a 55 percent clip (33-of-60) and 26 of XU's 33 buckets came via an assist. The Xavier defense was equally as effective, holding the Catamounts to a chilly 33 percent from the field. The Musketeers also won the battle of the boards by a lopsided 51-to-26 margin.
Xavier trailed by a 5-3 count after Kyle Greathouse nailed a 3-pointer at the 17-minute mark but the Musketeers took control of the game with a 9-0 run over the next two minutes and seized a 12-5 lead. The 9-0 spurt was capped off with a dunk by junior forward Josh Duncan.
The Musketeers would not let up, extending their run to 24-7 when Doellman hit a lay-up at the 10:20 mark to give XU a 27-12 lead. Brown sparked the run with a pair of old-fashioned 3-point plays.
Doellman drained a fade away jumper at the 1:50 mark to give XU its largest lead of the half, 46-29. With those two points, Doellman became the 42nd member of Xavier's 1000-point club.
Xavier will return to action on Tuesday, December 5 when the team takes on Detroit. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Cintas Center and the first 3,000 fans will receive a James Posey Bobblehead.
