Xavier University Musketeers vs. Bowling Green State University Falcons

The Xavier Musketeers (2-0) broke open a close game with just under eight minutes of the first half with a 21-3 run and cruised to a 101-57 victory against the Bowling Green Falcons (1-1). Jordan Crawford led five Musketeers in double-figure scoring with a collegiate career-high 24 points. Jason Love, Brad Redford, and Terrell Holloway each scored 12 points, and Mark Lyons chipped in 10 points. Love grabbed a career-high-tying 12 rebounds, and Crawford had 5 assists. The Falcons were led by Scott Thomas with 13 points, Otis Polk with 11, and Marc Larson with 10. Thomas grabbed 6 rebounds, and Joe Jakubowski and Jordon Crawford each had 4 assists.
With tonight’s win, Chris Mack improved to 2-0 to become the first XU head coach to start his career 2-0 since Skip Prosser began his XU tenure 3-0 in the 1994-95 season.
Xavier’s 101 points are the most scored by the Musketeers since they defeated Virginia 108-70 on January 3, 2008, at Cintas Center. The 44-point margin of victory is the largest since XU defeated Coppin State 98-49 (49-point margin) on November 20, 2007, at Cintas Center.
The 51 first-half points scored by the Musketeers are the most by an XU team since scoring 61 points against Virginia (1-3-08). XU’s 50-point second half was the highest-scoring second half since the Musketeers tallied 50 points against Purdue in the second round of NCAA Tournament (3-26-08).
Xavier shot a sizzling 64.8 percent (35-for-54) from the field for game. It marked the best shooting performance by an XU team since it hit 71.1 percent from the field (32-for-45) against Saint Joseph’s in the Atlantic 10 Tournament on March 11, 2004, at UD Arena. The Musketeers upended the top-ranked and undefeated Hawks 87-67 in that game.
The last time XU shot better than 60 percent from the field was against Virginia when the Musketeers hit 63.8 percent (37-for-58) of its shots from the field. XU was nearly as efficient behind the 3-point arc, connecting on 63.2 percent (12-for-19) of its attempts.
The Musketeers shot a sizzling 63.3 percent (19-for-30) in the first half. XU was even better from behind the 3-point arc, connecting on 9 of its 14 attempts, good for 64.3 percent. Jordan Crawford led all scorers with 15 points (three 3-pointers) at the intermission, while Brad Redford converted all three of his 3-point attempts for 12 points.
XU shot even better in the second half, connecting on 66.7 percent of its attempts (16-for-24).
After shooting a subpar 4-for-9 (.444) from the free throw line in the first half, XU converted 15 of 17 free throws (.882) in the second half to finish the game 19 for 26 (.731).
Jordan Crawford scored a collegiate career-high 24 points. His previous high came as a member of the Indiana Hoosiers against Northwestern (2-23-08). His high-scoring game as a Musketeer was 14 points in his debut against Youngstown State (11-13-09). His four 3-pointers also tied a career high, which he accomplished three times at Indiana.
Jason Love tied his career high with 12 rebounds. He also grabbed 12 boards against Memphis in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off (11-23-08). Love also notched his second career double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. His only other double-double came against George Washington (3-1-08) when he scored 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.
Jeff Robinson scored a career-high 6 points on three consecutive dunks late in the second half.
Xavier is now 122-17 (.878) at Cintas Center, its on-campus home arena, and has an 11-game home winning streak. XU is 60-7 (.896) against non-conference teams since Cintas Center opened during the 2000-01 season.
With the score tied at 6-all at 18:03 of the first half, XU went on a 12-2 run to take an 18-8 lead at 13:24. Five different Musketeers scored, led by Jordan Crawford and Brad Redford who each hit three-pointers.
Leading 29-25 at 7:52, XU finished the half with a 22-3 barrage to take a 51-28 lead. Jordan Crawford led Musketeers with 7 points, including a 3-pointer with 4 second remaining to culminate the scoring. Brad Redford also added a pair of 3-pointers for 6 points.
Up Next: Xavier welcomes the Sacred Heart University Pioneers of the Northeast Conference. This will be the first meeting between the two schools.
