CINCINNATI – Five Musketeers scored in double figures as XU downed the IPFW Mastadons in overtime, 76-66 Tuesday night at Cintas Center. Jamel McLean returned to floor and had his sixth double-double at XU with 11 points and 10 boards. Sophomore Jeff Robinson had a career night, earning highs in five categories.
Tu Holloway was the game’s leading scorer, with 24 points, one point shy of his effort from the Western Michigan game off of 5-of-8 shooting from the floor. Holloway grabbed a career-high nine rebounds in his 42 minutes of action.
Jeff Robinson earned career high in points (11), rebounds (6), made field goals (4), made free throws (3) and minutes played (27). McLean earned his 11th career double-figure rebound game, corralling 10 boards, to go with 11 points and three blocks. Mark Lyons was the third Musketeer to score 11 points, earning six of them from the charity stripe. Lyons dished out a game-high seven assists in a career-high 40 minutes of action.
The Musketeers won the battle of the boards, 44-32. Both teams were almost even in field goal percentage, so free throws were the difference maker in this game. Xavier went 23-of-33 while IPFW was 10-of-17.
Xavier led at the half, 36-29, by holding IPFW to several scoring droughts. Kenny Frease, Robinson and Holloway were all perfect from the line, going 11-of-11 collectively. Xavier out-rebounded IPFW in the first 27 to 13.
The Musketeers started the second half making two defensive stops and jumped to a quick 11 point lead off of a Danté Jackson jumper. IPFW came back to tie the game at 41 with 15:40 left in the half. That is when the Musketeers defense took over. Mark Lyons hit a trey and drained two free throws during a XU 7-0 run. McLean and Robinson each blocked a shot during the run. Xavier extended the lead to seven with 10:08 left in the game off a Robinson dunk.
IPFW was led by Jeremy Mixon down the stretch, whose five points helped give the Mastadons the advantage. Holloway then took a rebound coast-to-coast, getting fouled to complete the old-fashion three-point play to give XU the lead with under four minutes.
The Mastadons retained possession of the ball off of a controversial call for timeout. IPFW’s Trey McCorkle downed a jumper with six seconds to go in the game, forcing an overtime period.
It was all Xavier in extra time, with the Muskteers outscoring IPFW 12-3. Holloway got the scoring started with a jumper and XU never looked back.
Four Mastadons scored in double figures, led by Zach Plackemeier and Ben Botts who both had 13 points. John Peckinpaugh was IPFW’s leading rebounder with seven.
Xavier is next headed to the U.S. Virgin Islands to take part in the Paradise Jam. The Musketeers will square off against the Iowa Hawkeyes on Friday, November 19 at 8:30 p.m. Stay tuned to GoXavier.com for more news and scores from Xavier Athletics.
