Nov. 15, 2013
CINCINNATI - The Xavier men's basketball team defeated Morehead State 79-56 Friday night at Cintas Center. It was a team effort for the victory, as ten Musketeers scored. Xavier is now 3-0 on the season. Xavier also improved its record against Morehead State to 6-3.
With tonight's 20 points, sophomore guard Semaj Christon has now scored in double digits for the 22nd straight game dating back to last season.
The game opened up with both teams going back and forth, resulting in five lead changes within the game's first 11 minutes. Over a span of 4:42, Xavier went on a 12-0 run to increase their lead to nine. The run was propelled by a Dee Davis three pointer. The Musketeers went on another streak, scoring 14 to Morehead State's two, to take a 38-23 halftime lead.
Xavier held Morehead State to just 23 points in the first half. Xavier held its first two opponents this season to even fewer points in the first half of those games, Gardner-Webb 22 and Tennessee 23.
Christon led the team in scoring with eight points heading into the locker room. The Musketeers shot 46.4 percent (13-of-28) from the field and 57.9 percent from the charity stripe (11-of-19). Xavier's defense was solid again, holding the Eagles to an 18.5 (5-of-27) field goal percentage and an 18.2 (2-of-11) three-point percentage. They also shot 73.3 percent (11-of-15) from the foul line.
In the second half, Xavier continued to hold a sizeable lead over Morehead State. Christon had a nice dribble-spin move to nail a jumper with 14:23 remaining. Xavier had two fast-break baskets before the 12-minute media timeout, one resulting in an alley-oop from D. Davis to freshman Jalen Reynolds and the other coming off of a steal by Davis and a layup by Christon.
Xavier's final stat line consisted of a field goal percentage of 52.8 percent (28-of-53). The Musketeers shot 22.2 percent (2-of-9) from behind the arc, while shooting 70 percent (21-of-30) from the charity stripe. Morehead State shot 29.2 percent (14-of-48), 22.2 percent (4-of-18) from three-point territory, and 63.2 percent (24-of-38) on free throws. The Musketeers were able to dominate down low, scoring 50 of their 79 points in the paint. The defense also held the Eagles to only 16 points in the paint.
Christon, Reynolds and Isaiah Philmore all had big games for Xavier. Christon finished with a stat line of 20 points, five assists and 1 rebound. Reynolds added 11 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. Philmore made four of his five shots, resulting in ten points.
In his first game of the season after sitting out the first two games with an injury, D. Davis scored seven points and had nine assists and five rebounds.
Other contributors for the Musketeers included junior Matt Stainbrook with 7 points and 10 rebounds, sophomore James Farr had eight points including a three-pointer and Justin Martin contributed eight, six of which came from the free throw line.
Chad Posthumus and Luka Pajkovic led the Eagles in scoring, with 12 and 11, respectively.
The Musketeers' next game will be on Wednesday, Nov. 20, at 8:00 p.m. as the Miami (Oh.) Redhawks come to the Cintas Center. The game will be broadcast on both 700 WLW and Fox Sports 1. Stay tuned to GoXavier.com for the latest news and updates of men's basketball.
