November 13, 2012, at Cintas Center, ESPN Tip-Off Marathon


Xavier (now 2-0) defeated the Butler Bulldogs (1-1) 62-47 today before 9,876 fans at Cintas Center.  Senior forwards Jeff Robinson and Travis Taylor led all scorers with 17 and 15 points respectively.  Taylor also added nine rebounds and Robinson eight. 

Justin Martin added ten points and Brad Redford nine.  Redford went three for four for the game from beyond the arc and is now nine for 11 from that range for the first two games of the season.  Semaj Christon added eight assists in his first regular-season game in a Xavier uniform.

Kellen Dunham led the Bulldogs with 11 points off the bench and Andrew Smith scored nine points.  Roosevelt Jones led Butler with seven rebounds.

The Musketeers extended their home-court win streak to six going back to last season, and their all-time record at Cintas Center to 164-21 (.886).  Xavier’s record in non-conference games at Cintas Center is now 79-10 (.888).

This afternoon’s win gives Xavier a 31-16 advantage in its series all time with Butler, and a three-game win streak.  Xavier has won 10 of the last 12 games with Butler.  Butler last defeated the Musketeers on December 19, 2009, by the score of 69-68 at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

With the score tied 9-9 with 13:23 to go in the first half, Xavier went on a 12-2 run to go up 21-11 with 10:01 left.  Jeff Robinson and Dee Davis led the way with five points each during the run.

Trailing 32-18 with 4:51 remaining, Butler went on an 11-2 run of its own to pull within 34-29 at the 0:54 mark before halftime.   Andrew Smith paced the Bulldogs with five points, including a three-pointer.

After Butler narrowed the margin to 36-32 at the 17:59 mark of the second half, Xavier outscored the Bulldogs 10-1 to push the lead to 46-33 with 12:12 remaining.  Travis Taylor led the Musketeers with four points and Brad Redford added a three-point basket during the run.  After Alex Barlow tipped in a miss for the Bulldogs with 11:06 to go, Xavier answered with six points to go up 52-35 at 8:41.  Justin Martin finished the run with a three from the corner.

Travis Taylor’s 15 points today pushed him over the 1,000 mark for his college career to 1,010, counting his two seasons for Monmouth University. 

Xavier next plays Saturday afternoon, December 17, at 2PM at Cintas Center, against Robert Morris.  The Musketeers hold a 3-0 advantage all-time in the series with the Colonials, who play in the Northeast Conference.   Xavier and Robert Morris last played on December 7, 1988, at Cincinnati Gardens.  The Musketeers prevailed, 87-76.
