Xavier University Musketeers vs. Youngstown State University Penguins

Game Notes


The Xavier Musketeers (1-0) raced out to an 8-0 lead and never looked back, defeating the Youngstown State Penguins, 83-57. Jordan Crawford led five Musketeers in double-figure scoring with 14 points. Jason Love and Mark Lyons each scored 12 points, Brad Redford scored 11 points, and Terrell Holloway chipped in 10 points. Love grabbed 8 rebounds, and Holloway and Lyons each had 3 assists. Youngstown State was led by Vytas Suskis who scored 12 points while Sirlester Martin added 11 points. Dan Boulder grabbed 5 rebounds and DeAndre Mays and Vance Cooksey had 3 assists.


Xavier won its 20th straight season opener (19 at home, one on the road), and its 10th at Cintas Center. The last the Musketeers dropped an opener was in the 1989-90 "Sweet 16" season, losing to Southern Utah State, 97-90, on December 2, 1989, at Cincinnati Gardens.


Xavier, beginning its 10th season at Cintas Center, is now 121-17 (.877) at its on-campus home arena. XU is 59-7 (.894) against non-conference competition teams since Cintas Center opened during the 2000-01 season.


Chris Mack, XU's 17th head coach, begins his career on a winning note following the Musketeers' 83-57 victory against Youngstown State. Prior to taking over the head coaching position at his alma mater, Mack had served for seven years on the XU basketball staff, including the last five years as an assistant under Sean Miller.


Jordan Crawford scored 14 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in his Xavier debut. Mark Lyons, who also made his first appearance in a Musketeer uniform, scored 12 points and dished out 3 assists. Jeff Robinson, the third Xavier newcomer to play in the season opener, scored 2 points and grabbed a pair of rebounds.


The Musketeers hit 30-of-37 (.811) from the free throw line.


Andrew Taylor connected on his first three-pointer of his XU career.

Xavier raced out to a 13-2 lead following a Brad Redford three-pointer at 14:19. Jamel McLean paced the Musketeer attack with 5 points.


Leading 26-14 at 7:42 of the first half, XU went on a 15-2 spurt to take a 41-16 lead at 4:27. Brad Redford buried a pair of three-pointers for 6 points to lead the attack, while Mark Lyons added 5 points.


The Musketeers closed out the last 9:15 of the first half by hitting 9-of-11 from the field, including 4-for-4 from behind the three-point arc.


Up Next: Xavier welcomes the Bowling Green University Falcons to Cintas Center on Tuesday, November 17, 2009, at 7:30 p.m. Bowling Green, which is coached by former XU assistant Louis Orr, leads the all-time series with Xavier, 6-4. However the Musketeers have won the last two meetings. The most recent contest between the two teams took place December 30, 1989, when the Musketeers defeated the Falcons, 88-73, at Cincinnati Gardens. XU also won on the same date at Bowling Green the year before, 89-75.
