OXFORD, Ohio - OXFORD, Ohio - A late foul by Xavier gave Miami a two-point advantage and the lead for good with six seconds remaining as the Musketeers fell, 59-57, at Millett Hall on Tuesday evening. The loss puts XU at 1-1 on the season, while Miami takes its season opener and moves to 1-0 overall.
After a putback by MU's Tim Pollitz gave the RedHawks a 56-55 advantage with 56 seconds remaining, Xavier regained the lead, 57-56, on C.J. Anderson's two free throws with 35 seconds left in the game. In the ensuing possession, Michael Bramos was fouled on a three-point attempt and connected on all three free throws to give MU the 59-57 lead for good with six seconds remaining.
Miami only had four players score in the game, while recovering from 14 turnovers offensively. The RedHawks were led by Kenny Hayes who scored 14 of his 18 points in the second half. Pollitz added a game-high 21 points, seven rebounds and finished the game 9-for-13 from the floor.
Xavier was paced by sophomore Derrick Brown who finished with a team-high 12 points and six rebounds. Junior B.J. Raymond added 11 points, including 3-for-4 from three-point range and Anderson added 10.
The RedHawks opened the second half by scoring the first eight points and cut the Xavier advantage to four with 17:42 remaining. XU would net its first basket at the 17:16 mark as Brown stepped back and drilled a three to push the Musketeer lead back to six points, 34-28.
Miami gained its first lead since the 8:43 mark in the first half after Kenny Hayes converted an old-fashioned three point play to put the score at 52-50 with 5:49 left in the second half.
MU would hold the Musketeers to just seven field goals over the first 17 minutes of the second half before Brown put in back-to-back baskets to give Xavier the lead back with 2:07 remaining in the game.
The first half opened with a flurry of back and forth baskets by each team with no team gaining more than a two point advantage. Over the first 12 minutes, 11 lead changes and two ties set the tone before Xavier rattled off a 9-0 run to take an eight point advantage with 5:53 remaining. The run was capped by a Brown fast-break dunk from Drew Lavender that forced a Miami timeout.
The Musketeers were able to capitalize on 10 first-half turnovers by the RedHawks and net 12 points from the miscues. C.J. Anderson paced XU in the first half with eight points, five rebounds with four coming on the offensive glass. Anderson scored Xavier's final five points in the half and gave XU its largest lead of the half at 32-21 heading into the locker room.
The Musketeers will take a week off before returning to action at Cintas Center. XU will welcome Coppin State in the team's second game of the 2007 Chicago Invitational Challenge. Game time is set for 7:00 pm at Cintas Center on Tuesday, November 20.
