Game Notes

The Xavier Musketeers erased an 11-point second-half deficit behind a 20-point second half by Tu Holloway to defeat Western Michigan, 68-65. Holloway led the Musketeers with 25 points while Dante Jackson added 17 and Kenny Frease chipped in 14. Frease led the Musketeers with seven rebounds and Mark Lyons dished out a career-high 10 assists. Western Michigan was led by Flenard Whitfield who scored 15 points. Nate Hutcheson scored 11 and Matt Stainbrook added 10. Stainbrook and Demetrius Ward each grabbed seven rebounds and Juwan Howard Jr. and Alex Wolf dished out three assists apiece.

With tonight's win, Xavier has now won 21 consecutive season openers, with its last loss coming in a home opener during the 1989-90 "Sweet 16" season when it fell to Southern Utah State at Cincinnati Gardens, 97-90. Twenty of those wins have come at home (Cincinnati Gardens and Cintas Center).

Xavier extended it home winning streak to 25 games at Cintas Center. It is the third-longest active home court winning in the country and the longest by any XU squad since the building opened for the 2000-01 season.

Xavier, beginning its 11th season at Cintas Center, is now 136-17 (.889) all-time at its on-campus arena.

XU has won eight straight games against competition from the Mid-American Conference. Last season, the Musketeers were 3-0 against MAC teams, defeating Bowling Green, Kent State, and Miami. The Musketeers will face the Miami Redhawks on Wednesday, December 1, at Millett Hall in Oxford, Ohio.

Mark Lyons had a career-high 10 assists. His previous high was five assists vs. Baylor at the Old Spice Classic, (11-29-09). The last Musketeer to record 10 or more assists in a game was Tu Holloway who had 10 dishes against St. Bonaventure (3-6-10)

Tu Holloway scored 25 points, one point shy of his career-high of 26 points set against Kansas State during the Sweet 16 game in the 2010 NCAA Tournament (3-25-10). He also matched his career high with four 3-pointers, which he set in the Kansas State contest.

Kenny Frease scored 14 points, including 12 in the second half.

Dante Jackson scored 17 points, two points shy of his career high 19 points against Dayton (1-16-10). He also had four 3-pointers, one shy of his career-high five threes in the Dayton contest.

Jeff Robinson hit the first three-point field goal of his career at 10:53 of the first half. Last season he attempted one three-pointer.

Runs

Trailing 10-3 at 15:37 of the first half, Western Michigan went on a 20-6 run to take a 23-16 lead at 5:38. Juwan Howard Jr. scored six points to pace the Broncos. During the run, XU went more than five minutes (10:54 to 5:25) without scoring a point, and were outscored 11-0 during that stretch.

Trailing 34-23 at 18:56 of the second half, XU went on a 19-8 run to tie the score at 42-all at 10:41. Kenny Frease scored six points and Dante Jackson added five points during the stretch.

Trailing 49-42 at 8:45, XU went on a 15-2 run take a 57-51 lead at 4:14. Tu Holloway scored 10 points during the spurt.

Up Next: Xavier welcomes the IPFW Mastodons to Cintas Center on Tuesday, November 16, for a 7:00 p.m. contest. The Musketeers lead the all-time series with IPFW 2-0. The last time the teams met was November 14, 2008, when XU posted a 71-43 victory at Cintas Center.
