The Xavier Musketeers (1-0) erased a 10-point deficit in the last five minutes of the first half and pulled away to defeat Morgan State (0-1), 74-63. Xavier was led by Mark Lyons who scored 22 points, grabbed 7 rebounds, and dished out 6 assists. Dez Wells added 12 points and Kenny Frease chipped in 10. Morgan State was led in scoring by Kevin Thompson who scored 14 points. Justin Black and DeWayne Jackson each scored 11 points, and Aric Brooks added 10. Thompson grabbed 10 rebounds and Larry Bastfield had 3 assists.

Xavier has now won 22 straight regular season openers (21 at home and one on the road). Its last loss in a season opener occurred in the 1989-90 "Sweet 16" season to Southern Utah State, 97-90, at Cincinnati Gardens (12-2-89). XU is 12-0 at Cintas Center in season-opening games.

Xavier, in its 12th season at Cintas Center, is now 150-18 (.893) all-time at it on-campus home arena, including 72-8 (.900) against non-conference competition.

With a full house of 10,250 fans in attendance for tonight's season opener, Xavier recorded its 100th sell-out of Cintas Center since the arena opened for the 2000-01 season. XU has averaged more than 10,035 fans per game for 168 home games at its on-campus arena.

Tonight's game was the first contest All-American guard Tu Holloway has missed since sitting out a pair of games early in his freshman season (2008-09) due to a stress fracture in his left foot. Holloway had played in 95 straight games, including 67 consecutive starts.

Freshman Dezmine Wells became the first freshman to start in his debut as a Musketeer since Romain Sato was in the starting lineup for the opening of Cintas Center against Miami (Ohio) on November 18, 2000. Wells finished with 12 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 assists in 21 minutes of action.

Mark Lyons led Xavier with 22 points, including 10 of the Musketeers' first 12 points of the second half to help extend XU's lead to 52-37 at 14:38. He also paced the Musketeers with 7 rebounds and 6 assists.

Brad Redford, who missed all of the 2010-11 season due to a preseason knee injury, picked up where he left off from behind the 3-point arc, converting two of his three 3-point attempts while grabbing 3 rebounds in 11 minutes of action.

Fifth-year senior Andre Walker scored his first point as a Musketeer with a free throw at 17:13 of the first half.

Junior Travis Taylor scored his first points as a Musketeer with a pair of free throws at 11:25 of the second half.

Freshman Dezmine Wells scored his first collegiate points on a layup at 11:50 of the first half.

Freshman Justin Martin scored his first collegiate points on a three-point basket at 3:17 of the first half.

Freshman Dee Davis scored his first collegiate points on a layup at 15:01 of the second half.

XU's newcomers - Andre Walker, Dez Wells, Dee Davis, Travis Taylor, and Justin Martin - combined to score 28 points, grab 16 rebounds, and dish out 9 assists in their debut in the Musketeer uniform. Runs

With the scored tied 7-all at 16:05, Morgan State went on a 13-3 run to take a 20-10 lead at 12:07. Justin Black and Ali Ameer each scored 4 points for the Bears.

Trailing 28-21 at 5:46 of the first half, XU went on a 19-7 run, including a 3-pointer by Dez Wells with 5 seconds remaining, to take a 40-35 lead into intermission. Wells and Andre Walker each scored 10 points to pace Xavier during the stretch. The Musketeers extended the lead to 48-36 at 16:57 of the second half as Mark Lyons hit a layup and a pair of three-pointers.

Up Next: Xavier welcomes IPFW to Cintas Center on Tuesday November 15 for a 7 p.m. contest. XU leads the all-time series 3-0, including a 76-66 victory over the Mastodons last season (11-16-10). In that contest, five Musketeers scored in double figures, led by Tu Holloway who scored 24 points. Jamel McLean, Jeff Robinson, and Mark Lyons each scored 11 points, and Dante Jackson added 10. McLean recorded his eighth collegiate double-double with 10 rebounds.
