CINCINNATI - Junior guard Stanley Burrell scored 17 first-half points and led all scorers with 19 as the Xavier University men's basketball team downed Coastal Carolina, 79-46, on Saturday evening in front of 9,945 at Cintas Center. The contest was the regular season opener for both squads.

The game marked the first time XU held an opponent under 50 points since last season's opener, an 80-45 win over Eastern Illinois.

Freshman forward Derrick Brown scored 11 points on 4-of-4 shooting in his regular season debut. Brown also snared six rebounds on the night.

Senior forward Justin Cage was the third Musketeer in double-figures, scoring 10 points and snatching a game-high seven rebounds.

After opening up a 38-24 lead at the half the Musketeers would not let up, extending the lead to 22 points, 53-31, when Justin Doellman hit a turnaround jumper at the 12-minute mark.

XU ended the contest on a 9-0 run, which was highlighted by a Johnny Wolf to Brown alley-oop in the contest's closing stages.

Xavier held a commanding 40-28 rebounding advantage including a 26-17 edge on the defensive glass. XU took care of the ball in its 2006-07 debut, committing only 11 turnovers on the night. The Xavier defense forced the Chanticleers into 16 turnovers and converted those 16 miscues into 22 points.

The Xavier offense ran smoothly on Saturday, as the Musketeers converted on 50 percent (26-of-52) of their field goal attempts. XU held Coastal to only 35 percent shooting (19-of-54) on the night.

The first half was a back-and-forth battle early on, featuring three ties and six lead changes. The Chanticleers took their largest lead of the half, 20-17, after Everage Richardson converted on a fast break lay-up at the 6:50 mark.

XU would clamp down defensively though, holding Coastal Carolina to just one field goal over the remainder of the first session. The Xavier offense also picked up as the Musketeers charged out to a 21-4 run and seized a 38-24 lead at the break.

Burrell keyed the XU run with seven points and Doellman gave XU the lead for good, 22-20, when he drilled a 3-pointer in transition with 5:50 left in the first stanza.

The Musketeers are back in action on Friday, November 17 when the team travels to the Virgin Islands to take on Virginia Commonwealth in the Paradise Jam. Game time is set for 6 p.m. EST.
