The Xavier Musketeers won their 23rd straight regular-season opener tonight, by a score of 117 to 75. Twenty-two of those openers have come at home. Xavier has won all 13 of its season openers at Cintas Center.
With tonight’s win Xavier has compiled a 163-21 record (.886) at Cintas Center since it opened in 2000. The victory was Xavier’s fifth in a row at home dating back to a 73-68 loss to St. Louis on January 25, 2012.
The 117 points are the most Xavier has scored in a Cintas Center game. The Musketeers last scored 100 points on February 22, 2011, against La Salle at Cintas Center, a 100-62 win. Xavier had reached the 108 mark three times at Cintas Center, on January 31, 2010, against Fordham (108-60), on January 3, 2008, against Virginia (108-70) and on December 8, 2001, against Long Island (108-57).
The most points Xavier has ever scored in a game is 125. The Musketeers reached that milestone on January 9, 1988, at Schmidt Fieldhouse versus Florida International in a 125-84 victory.
The Musketeers broke open a tight game early in the first half with a 30-6 run over about seven minutes, to take a 42-19 lead with 8:28 remaining. Brad Redford came off the bench to spark Xavier with 13 points during the run, on four three-pointers and a free throw.
The 68 points scored in the first half by Xavier are its most in a half since scoring 72 against Florida International in the 125-84 win over Florida International.
Dee Davis led Xavier scorers with 22 points and added 15 assists. Both are career highs. His previous highs were 10 points and six assists against Oral Roberts on December 18, 2011. Only Keith Walker has recorded more assists for Xavier in a single game, namely 18 on December 18, 2011, against Detroit. Davis’s 15 assists are the most ever by a Musketeer sophomore.
Lonnie Robinson led the Knights with 20 points and three assists. Melquan Bolding added 17 points and five assists.
Brad Redford scored a career-high 19 points, on 6-of-7 shooting beyond arc. His previous high was 16 points at Kansas State on December 8, 2009. His previous career high for threes was five, against Fordham on February 14, 2009, and against Robert Morris on December 31, 2008.
Travis Taylor recorded a double-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds. His 20 points established a Xavier career high and his 12 rebounds tied his career high. His previous highs at Xavier were 13 points against Southern Illinois on Christmas Day of 2011 in the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic, and 12 rebounds versus Georgia on November 25, 2011.
Justin Martin assisted on six baskets, a career high, to go with 11 points. His prior high of three assists came on December 23, 2011, against Hawaii, in the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic.
Xavier next plays Tuesday, November 13, at home against the Butler Bulldogs, a four-o’clock afternoon start.
