The Xavier Musketeers defeated the visiting the Kentucky State Thorobreds, an NCAA Division II program from Frankfort, Kentucky, 74-53, in its one and only public preseason exhibition game at Cintas Center, before a crowd of 9,051. Xavier opens the regular season at Cintas Center Friday, November 9, at 7PM, against Fairleigh Dickinson.
Senior Jeff Robinson, and newcomers Erik Stenger (a junior) and Semaj Christon (a freshman), each tallied 12 points to share the team scoring honors. Two other Musketeers scored in double figures, junior Justin Martin and senior Travis Taylor each with 10. Stenger also pulled down nine rebounds to lead the team in that category while Martin had seven. Patrick Dawson led the Thorobreds with 16 points and five rebounds and Ulysses Thomas III added 12.
In the first half an early 14-4 run gave Kentucky State a 14-10 lead with 10:52 to go. But the Musketeers responded with their own run, 14-2, highlighted by a dunk on a breakaway by Jeff Robinson and a three-pointer by Justin Martin in transition, the Musketeers’ sole three-point goal of the game. The run put Xavier up 24-16 at the 6:32 mark. Then Xavier ended the half on a 9-0 run to take a 35-23 lead into the locker room.
Xavier increased its lead to 17 (51-34) with 11:31 to go after Martin scored on an offensive rebound. The Musketeers slowly extended the lead to 63-39 on a layup by Jeff Robinson with 5:40 to go.
The Musketeers used their size advantage against the Thorobreds to outscore them in the paint 46-12. Xavier also forced 24 turnovers and scored 31 points after those turnovers. By comparison the Musketeers themselves committed only 15 turnovers.
