CINCINNATI - The Xavier men's basketball squad topped the Kentucky State Thorobreds 74-53 Saturday night at Cintas Center. Five Musketeers scored in double figures to power their way past the Thorobreds.
Senior Jeff Robinson, junior Erik Stenger, and freshman Semaj Christon had a team-high 12 points in the Musketeer victory. Christon made five of his twelve shots from the field while making two of his three shots from the charity stripe. The Cincinnati native added five assists to the stat sheet as well.
Robinson grabbed five rebounds and had a team-high three steals. Stenger fell one rebound shy of capturing a double-double while swatting away a game-high four shots. The 6-8 forward shot 5-of-7 from the field while swiping a team-high three steals.
Travis Taylor was the fifth Musketeer in double figures as he added 10 points. Taylor missed only one shot as he made three of his four shots from the floor.
Sophomore Justin Martin added 10 points to the contest making the team's only three-point shot. Martin corralled seven rebounds for the Musketeers. Dee Davis contributed eight points to the contest to go along with his game-high five assists.
Xavier opened up with a 17 point lead with 11:40 left in the second half after Martin grabbed an offensive rebound from a missed Davis three-pointer and went up strong with the put back. The Musketeers never looked back as they were in charge for the rest of the contest.
All game XU had the advantage in the paint, outscoring KSU 46-12. Xavier was able to force 24 turnovers and scored 31 points off those Kentucky State miscues. Xavier did a great job taking care of the ball as Kentucky State forced only 15 turnovers and scored eight points off those turnovers.
Xavier entered the locker room with a 12 point edge over Kentucky State leading 35-23. Christon led all scorers at half with 10 points with 4-of-9 from the floor.
The Musketeers started off the game with a bang as Christon threw up an alley-oop which was finished by Robinson. Christon was involved in XU's first five scoring plays (four points and three assists). However, a 14-4 run by the Thorobreds gave them a 14-10 lead with 10:52 left in the first half.
The Musketeers went on a 14-2 run of their own, which included a breakaway slam dunk by Robinson and a quick transition three-pointer by Martin. Stenger was responsible for four points during the run. XU led 24-16 with six minutes left to play in the first half.
XU closed out the first half with a 9-0 run stretching for over three minutes. XU ended the first half shooting 50 percent (13-of-26) from the field while KSU finished 33.3 percent (7-of-21). KSU shot 50 percent (5-of-10) from long range while XU only shot 12.5 percent (1-of-8).
Patrick Dawson of Kentucky State scored a game-high 16 points as he shot 5-of-14 from the field.
