ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. -- Xavier fell in the finals of the 2012 Atlantic 10 tournament to St. Bonaventure 67-56 Sunday afternoon at Boardwalk Hall. With the loss, the Musketeers fell to 21-12 on the season while SBU improved to 20-11.
Senior Tu Holloway led the Musketeers with 17 points on 5-of-13 from the field and 7-of-8 from the field. Junior Mark Lyons added 16 points while freshman Dezimine Wells and senior Kenny Frease each added seven points. Holloway and Lyons were each honored with a place on the All-Tournament team.
Andrew Nicholson was the only Bonnie in double-figures as he led all scorers with 26 points on 7-of-13 from the field and a perfect 10-of-10 from the free-throw line. He also led all participants with 14 rebounds.
The Bonnies led by as much as 17 points with just over 18 minutes left in the second half but XU clawed back into the game.
The Musketeers chipped into the SBU lead with an 11-0 run that included seven points from Lyons and was capped by two free throws from Holloway at the 13:06 mark that cut the SBU lead to 41-35.
Wells earned a fastbreak layup and a free throw at the 10:03 mark to cut the SBU lead to 45-41. The freshman struck again on the next Xavier possession with a jumper that kept the game within five, 48-43.
The Bonnies took a 13-point, 37-24, lead into halftime thanks to 48 percent shooting from the field and 45 percent from behind the arc. Nicholson led SBU in the first frame with 12 points on 4-of-7 from the field.
Holloway was tops for Xavier in the first half with 11 points coming on 4-of-6 from the field and 3-of-3 from the free-throw line.
SBU jumped out to a 19-9 lead at the 10 minute mark thanks to a six-minute 16-5 run. Xavier cut the SBU lead to 11, 35-24, with 1:20 left in the half with two free throws from Lyons.
The Musketeers will learn what their post season future will be on Selection Sunday Sunday night at 6 p.m.
