Doellman, Cage Key Xavier Rally Past Charlotte in A-10 Quarters

CINCINNATI - Junior forward Justin Doellman scored 14 points to lead three Musketeers in double-figures as the Xavier University men's basketball team mounted a late rally to defeat Charlotte, 59-55, in quarterfinal action of the 2006 Atlantic 10 Championship on Thursday evening in Cincinnati.
With the win, XU improves to 19-10 overall and advances to the semifinal round of the A-10 Championship for the seventh time in 11 years. # 10 seed Xavier will play either #6 seed Fordham or #3 seed La Salle on Saturday at 8:30 p.m.
Justin Cage tied the game up at 54 with a big put-back with 1:20 remaining in regulation. That marked the seventh and final time the score was tied in the contest. After a big Xavier stop on Charlotte's ensuing possession, Josh Duncan was fouled and buried a pair of free throws to give XU a 56-54 advantage with 1:03 to go.
Leemire Goldwire missed a 3-pointer on the 49'ers next trip and Xavier regained possession. Stanley Burrell then missed a jumper with 20-seconds to go but Doellman snatched a pivotal offensive rebound and kicked the ball out to Burrell who was fouled with 15-seconds to go.
Burrell drained both free throws and then another with five-seconds to go, ensuring the Musketeer victory.
Doellman also corralled a team-high eight rebounds to go along with his 14 points. Cage scored 13 points and was 6-of-7 from the field. Cage also posted two steals in 39 minutes of action.
Burrell scored 10 points, all in the second half, and chased down three boards. Freshman guard Johnny Wolf netted nine points on the night while dishing-out three assists.
Duncan scored six points and dropped a game-high five dimes.
Goldwire led the way for Charlotte with 19 points on 6-of-13 shooting.
The Musketeers stretched their 29-27 halftime lead to eight points, 44-36, when Cage capped a 10-3 XU run with a trey from the corner, midway through the second half.
Charlotte would answer though and mounted an 18-6 run over the next 6:50 to take a 54-50 edge. Goldwire drained three 3-pointers and scored 11 points during the Charlotte run.
Xavier was solid on the defensive end, holding Charlotte to 31.3 percent shooting on the night including a frigid 27.3 percent in the second half.
XU also took care of business from the charity stripe, going 9-of-12 from the line while the 49'ers were just 10-of-18 (55.6 percent) on the night.
The first half was a back-and-forth battle, which included six ties and 10 lead changes. Xavier led by three points after B.J. Raymond drilled a 3-pointer on the wing with one-minute remaining in the first session.
Charlotte converted on one of its two free throw attempts just five seconds later and Xavier got a big stop on the half's final possession to take a 29-27 edge into intermission.
