No.17 AP/18 ESPN/USA Today Xavier Musketeers (24-5, 12-3 Atlantic 10) clinched at least a share of their third straight Atlantic 10 Regular Season Championship with 76-59 victory over the Dayton Flyers (24-6, 10-5). Xavier was led by game MVP Danté Jackson who scored 14 points, grabbed a career-high eight rebounds, dished out three assists and had three steals in 24 minutes of action. B.J. Raymond also scored 14 points. Derrick Brown added 11, and Jamel McLean chipped in 10. Brown grabbed 12 rebounds to complete his second straight double-double, and Jackson and Brown each had three assists. The Flyers were led by Marcus Johnson who scored 19 points with Charles Little adding 11 and Chris Wright 10. Chris Johnson grabbed seven rebounds and London Warren dished out five assists.
With tonight's win, the Musketeers clinched at least a share of its third-straight Atlantic 10 Regular Season Championship. The Musketeers can claim the outright title on Saturday with a win at Richmond or a Rhode Island loss to Massachusetts.
The Musketeers have now won 24 straight games against Dayton in the City of Cincinnati, including nine straight at Cintas Center. The last time Dayton defeated XU in Cincinnati was a 74-72 victory at Cincinnati Coliseum (now U.S. Bank Arena) on January 10, 1981.
Xavier completed its third straight undefeated Atlantic 10 Conference home season at Cintas Center. The Musketeers have won 24 consecutive home games against A-10 competition (8-0, 2006-07; 8-0, 2007-08; and 8-0, 2008-09).
Xavier is now 120-17 (.876) in nine season at Cintas Center, and 62-10 (.861) against Atlantic 10 competition at its on-campus home arena.
XU's 49 rebounds established a season high. The previous high was 48 against Charlotte (1-28-09) and at Rhode Island (1-15-09). The Musketeers also matched season their season highs in field goal attempts with 65 (also at Virginia, 1-3-09) and blocked shots with 12 (also against Butler, 12-23-08, and Ohio, 12-10-08).
XU held Dayton to just 35.8 percent shooting (24-for-67), making it the 18th time in 29 games that the Musketeers have held the opponent under 40 percent shooting. Xavier has now held its opponents to 37.8 percent shooting from the field for the season. XU entered the game ranked first in the Atlantic 10 and 11th in the nation in the latest NCAA rankings at 38.6 percent.
B.J. Raymond notched his 1,000th career point on a three-pointer with 6:39 remaining in the second half to extend XU's lead to 60-49. Raymond finished with 12 points, putting him in 47th place on XU's all-time scoring list with 1,007 career points.
Tonight's victory made B.J. Raymond the winningest player in XU history with 100 victories thus far in his career. Raymond entered the game tied with the class of 2004, which included Lionel Chalmers and Romain Sato, with 99 wins.
Danté Jackson grabbed a career-high eight rebounds. His previous high was six boards against Robert Morris (12-31-08) and Virginia Tech at the Puerto Rico Tip-Off (11-21-08). He also tied his career high with three 3-pointers. He hit three 3-pointers on five other occasions.
Jason Love had a career-high five blocked shots. His previous high was four blocks at Cincinnati (12-13-08) and against Ohio (12-10-08).
Derrick Brown grabbed a season-high 12 rebounds. His previous high this season was 11 against Charlotte (1-28-09). Brown also notched his third double-double of the season with 11 points, and the eighth double-double of his career.
Trailing 2-0 at 19:39, XU went on an 11-0 run to take an 11-2 lead at 17:17. Danté Jackson scored all 11 points, including three 3-pointers, for the Musketeers.
