Xavier joined the Atlantic 10 Conference in 1995 and has an overall conference tournament record of 23-12 (17 appearances). The Musketeers have made it to the tournament championship game four times (1998, 2002, 2004, and 2006), winning all four contests. In the quarterfinal round of last year's tournament, the top-seeded Musketeers fell behind #9 seed Dayton Flyers, 21-3, in the early going, but were able to cut the deficit to just nine points (36-27) by the half. The Flyers extended the lead to 17 points with a little over 12 minutes remaining before XU turned up the pressure, outscoring Dayton 20-5 over the next five minutes to cut the lead to 59-57. Dayton led 66-64 with under a minute left in the game before Tu Holloway scored a traditional 3-point play with 23 seconds left to give XU its first lead of the game, 67-66. But the Flyers converted a pair of free throws after a loose ball foul was called on the Musketeers to win the game, 68-67.
