With tonight's win, Xavier clinched at least a share of the Atlantic 10 Regular Season Championship. It is the fifth straight season XU has won outright or shared the regular season conference title, and it's the ninth time overall XU has finished as regular season champions since joining the A-10 for the 1995-96 season. The Musketeers can wrap up the sole possession of the title by winning at Saint Louis Saturday or with a Temple loss to La Salle Saturday.
Xavier is now 149-18 (.892) after 11 seasons at Cintas Center, its on-campus home arena. The Musketeers are 78-10 (.886) against Atlantic 10 competition at Cintas Center. XU is 67-3 (.957) in its last 70 games at Cintas Center, with the only home losses coming to Tennessee (2007-08), Butler (2008-09), and Florida (2010-11).
Tonight's win was Xavier's 40th straight conference home win, which is an Atlantic 10 record. Xavier has finished the conference home slate 8-0 the last five years. XU's last home loss to an A-10 foe came to Saint Joseph's, 69-58, in the 2005-06 home finale (2-28-06).
Xavier held Charlotte to a season-low 48 points. The previous low was 49 points against Tennessee (12-17-10).
Charlotte had 10 steals, the most by a Xavier opponent this season. The previous high was 9 steals by Gonzaga (12-22-10) and Butler (12-9-10).
Jamel McLean recorded his ninth double-double of the season with 11 points and 13 rebounds.
Xavier has won the last 13 games in which Kenny Frease has scored in double figures. The last time Frease scored in double figures and the Musketeers lost was against Florida (12-31-10) when he scored 16 points in a 71-67 setback.
Trailing 15-11 at 12:39 of the first half, XU went on a 12-0 run to take a 23-15 lead at 8:11. Dante Jackson converted a pair of 3-pointers during the spurt.
Up Next: Xavier wraps up the regular season on Saturday, March 5, at Saint Louis. XU leads the all-time series with the Billikens, 27-13, including a 76-68 victory on February 5 earlier this season. In that contest, Tu Holloway scored 20 of his 24 points to the second half to rally the Musketeers from a 32-31 deficit early in the stanza. Mark Lyons added 15 points and 7 assists, Kenny Frease chipped in 12, and Jamel McLean scored 11. The Billikens' Brian Conklin scored 24 points to lead Saint Louis.
