CINCINNATI - The No. 23 Xavier Musketeers led by its seniors were able to defeat the visiting Charlotte 49ers, 68-48, Wednesday night at Cintas to clinch a portion of its fifth-straight Atlantic 10 Regular Season Championship. With the win, the Musketeers also secure the No. 1 seed in the A-10 Tournament.

Four Musketeers scored in double figures including senior Danté Jackson, who led all scorers with a near career-high 18 points off 6-of-10 shooting. Senior Jamel McLean tallied his ninth double-double of the season scoring 13 points and corralling a team-high 13 rebounds. Juniors Kenny Frease and Mark Lyons added 14 and 10 points respectively.

With the win the Musketeers move to 23-6 on the season and 14-1 in conference action. The 49ers drop to 10-19 and 2-13.

Xavier shot 47.4 percent for the game, to Charlotte's 36.0 percent. The Musketeers won the rebound battle handedly, grabbing 43 boards to the 49ers 26. Xavier also bested Charlotte in the points in the paint category (36-26), points off turnovers (23-15), second-chance points (18-5) and bench points (11-8).

The Musketeers scored the first six points of the second half and did not let the 49ers connect on a field goal for over four minutes. Charlotte was held without a basket from the floor for over six minutes spanning from towards the end of the first period to the 16:19 mark of the second frame.

Charlotte got out to a quick 7-0 lead to start the contest. The Musketeers battled back, tying the game at 15 with 11:27 left to play. Xavier held Charlotte without a field goal over a span five mintues, during which the Musketeers went on a 12-0 run.

The catalyst for the run were seniors McLean and Jackson. McLean got the crowd energized on his hustle play near the basket, while Jackson drained back-to-back treys to give the Musketeers the 23-15 lead with about eight minutes to go.

The score at intermission was 36-25, with the Musketeers shooting a hot 57.7 percent from the floor, to the 49ers 42.3 percent. Jackson led the way for Xavier in the first, going a perfect 5-of-5 from the floor, including 3-of-3 from long range to put up 13 points.

Charlotte was led by Chris Braswell and Derrio Green who each put up 14 points.
