CINCINNATI - Led by sophomore Terrell Holloway with 24 points, 11 coming in the overtime sessions, the Xavier men's basketball team outlasted No. 23/24 Richmond, 78-76, in double overtime Sunday afternoon at Cintas Center. The Musketeer are now in a tie with Temple for first place in the Atlantic 10 standings with a 12-2 conference mark.
Three other Musketeers recorded double-digit scoring games as sophomore Jordan Crawford added 19, senior Jason Love chipped in 16 points and nine boards and freshman Mark Lyons tallied 10. Junior Jamel McLean grabbed a career-high tying 13 rebounds, narrowly missing the double-double with nine points.
Xavier (21-7, 12-2 A-10) led the battle of the boards by an impressive 47-35 margin but turned the ball over a season-high tying 20 times to the Spiders' 12 miscues. With today's win, Love tied former XU player B.J. Raymond's record for most wins by a player with 103. Over his career, Love is 103-31 (.769).
The Musketeers and Spiders battled to the last second as XU led by five, 62-57, at the 2:00 minute mark of the second half but UR knotted the game at 64-all on a three-pointer with 26 tics left on the clock. There were three ties and three lead changes in the first overtime period, and Love's tip-in at 1:41 evened the two squads at 70 apiece.
In the second overtime, Holloway scored seven of XU's eight points in the second extra period including starting off with a three-pointer. Love made the front end of two-shot trip to the foul line to ice the game and give the Musketeers their winning margin, 78-76.
A jumper from Lyons with just over 11 minutes gone in the first half, Xavier took its largest lead of the contest, 22-15. Richmond (22-7, 11-3 A-10) held its largest lead of the game, three points (30-27), with 4:44 left to play in the first frame. XU used four straight points from Lyons to retake the lead and held the 38-34 margin heading into the locker room at intermission.
The Spiders were led by David Gonzalvez with 18 points and nine rebounds.
The Musketeers return to action Wednesday, March 3 as they head to the Big Apple for a showdown with Fordham. Tip is set for 7 p.m. at Rose Hill Gym.
