CINCINNATI - Senior forward Justin Doellman scored 13 second-half points and senior forward Justin Cage added 12 points on senior night to lead the Xavier University men's basketball team past Saint Joseph's by a 72-62 score on Wednesday in front of a capacity crowd at Cintas Center. With the win, Xavier improves to 22-7 overall and 12-3 in Atlantic 10 play. The Hawks slip to 17-12, 9-6.
Doellman's 15 came on 4-of-9 shooting and he was also 6-of-7 from the free throw line. Cage was 5-of-8 from the floor and also dished-out a pair of assists.
Junior point guard Drew Lavender continued his outstanding play, scoring eight points and dishing-out a career-high tying nine assists without committing a single turnover. Sophomore forward B.J. Raymond chipped in with 10 points and made all three of his attempts from long-range.
Xavier led 26-22 at the break and could not shake Saint Joe's as the Hawks trailed by just seven points, 49-42, with 8:30 remaining after Rob Ferguson converted on a slam dunk.
Xavier would take command of the game with a 12-4 run over the next four minutes and built a 59-44 lead with 5:20 to go after Stanley Burrell made a driving lay-up. Cage and Doellman combined to score seven points during the spurt, including Doellman's fast break lay-up and the harm that brought the crowd of 10,250 to its feet.
The Hawks were unable to pull back within single-digits for the remainder of the contest as Xavier cruised to the victory.
Xavier lost the battle of the boards by a 33-to-29 margin but battled to a 16-to-13 advantage on the offensive glass. The Musketeers shot 42.9 percent from the field on the night but were a solid 52.2 percent from the floor in the second half.
XU turned the ball over 11 times in the contest but committed only three miscues in the second half.
Ahmad Nivins led the way for Saint Joe's with 24 points and 13 rebounds.
The Hawks led 8-0 just four-minutes into the contest after the Musketeers missed their first nine attempts from the field. However, XU would respond by making its next four field goal attempts to ignite a game-changing 25-8 run over the next 11:40.
Saint Joe's would whittle the lead down to four points, 26-22, at the half on the strength of a 6-1 spurt over the final 4:20 of the first stanza.
The Musketeers will conclude their regular season on Saturday, February 3 when the team travels to Philadelphia to take on La Salle. Game time is set for 12 p.m. and the contest will be televised regionally by FSN Ohio.
