Feb. 28, 2006
CINCINNATI - Junior Justin Cage scored 14 points and snared a game-high seven rebounds but it was not enough as the Xavier University men's basketball team dropped a 68-58 decision to Saint Joseph's on Tuesday evening at Cintas Center. With the loss, Xavier slips to 17-9 overall and 8-7 in Atlantic 10 play. The Hawks improve to 14-12, 8-7.
The Hawks' backcourt of Dwayne Lee and Abdulai Jalloh was too much for XU, as the duo scored 18 points a piece and was a combined 14-of-16 from the free throw line.
The Hawks took care of business from the charity stripe, connecting on 24 of their 26 attempts while Xavier was just 10-of-19 from the free throw line.
The Musketeers trailed by four points, 45-41, after Will Caudle made a free throw but a pair of Saint Joe's 3-pointers put Saint Joe's back up by 10 points with 8:50 to go.
Xavier would cut the lead to five points with under one-minute remaining but the Hawks put the Musketeers away from the free throw line, going 7-for-8 in the game's final minute.
Junior swingman Justin Doellman joined Cage in double-figures with 12 points on 3-of-5 shooting from the field. Cage's 14 came on 5-of-7 shooting.
Sophomore Stanley Burrell scored only five points for XU but did tie a career high with a game-high six assists.
Caudle added nine points and was 4-of-5 from the field on senior night.
Xavier held an 18-to-12 edge in points in the paint but the Hawks took advantage of 13 Musketeer turnovers, converting the miscues into 19 points.
The Musketeers will return to action on Saturday, March 4 when the team travels Amherst to take on UMass. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m. and will televised regionally by FSN Ohio.
