Rhode Island (12-13, 6-8 Atlantic 10), which has now lost seven of its last eight games, trailed by 16 points with 2:58 left, but battled to within four points with 1:12 remaining.
Jimmy Baron, who tied a career high with 16 points, pulled Rhode Island within 77-73 with a putback, but the Rams could not get any closer.
Dawan Robinson led Rhode Island with 21 points and Jamaal Wise added 16.
The game was tied 17-17 with 8:58 to play in the first half, but Xavier (17-8, 8-6) outscored the Rams 21-9 to close the half. Duncan's 3-pointer as time ran out gave Xavier a 38-26 halftime lead.
Duncan's 3 was one of seven Xavier made in the first half. The Musketeers finished 9-of-20 on three-pointers for the game.
