Saturday, February 23, 2013, 2 PM Eastern, at Cintas Center
Virginia Commonwealth defeated Xavier this afternoon 75-71. With this afternoon's loss Xavier is now 90-12 (.882) all time at Cintas Center, and 81-13 (.862) in Atlantic 10 conference games at home. Xavier's loss today was its first at home to an A-10 opponent since losing to Saint Louis last season (73-68 on January 25). XU is now 52-2 at home versus A-10 opponents since 2007.
The Musketeers went 14-for-19 (.737) from the field in the first half, and three for seven (.429) from beyond the arc. The Musketeers missed only one two-point shot in the first half. Xavier's 73.7% shooting in the first half was its best shooting half of the season. The Musketeers shot 70.6% in the first half of the Fairleigh Dickinson game on November 9, their previous high for a half.
Xavier's 22 turnovers were a season-high. Its previous high was 20 at Wake Forest on January 20.
Brad Redford and Dee Davis both scored 15 points to lead Xavier. It was the first game that Redford scored more than six since the La Salle victory on January 14. Davis's 15 is the second most he has scored in a game this season and is a figure he has reached in two other games. His high was 22 in the Fairleigh Dickinson game.
Troy Daniels led VCU with 19 points and five three pointers. This afternoon Daniels set the school's single-season record with 100 three pointers for the season.
Virginia Commonwealth's 75 points matched the most by a Xavier opponent this season. Fairleigh Dickinson also scored 75 against the Musketeers on November 9. The Rams' 49 points in the second half were the most by an opponent since the Fairleigh Dickinson game, when Fairleigh Dickinson scored 43 in the second half.
VCU's 12 steals were the second most by a Xavier opponent this season. La Salle had 14 steals against Xavier on January 14.
VCU outrebounded the Musketeers 32-29. It was only the second time in the last 16 games that XU hadn't outrebounded its opponent and the first time over that stretch that an opponent had outrebounded Xavier.
Leading 15-12 with 10:59 remaining in the first half, Xavier scored 13 of the next 15 points to stretch the lead to 28-14 with 5:32 left. Dee Davis paced the Musketeers with six points on two three pointers during the run.
Trailing 43-26 with 18:57 remaining in the second half, VCU went on a 10-0 run to cut Xavier's lead to 43-36 with 17:00 left in the game. Troy Daniels led the Rams with six points on two treys during the run.
Trailing 48-39 with 14:44 left, the Rams ran off the next 11 points to take a 50-48 lead with 10:42 left. Treveon Graham led VCU with five points during that run.
The Musketeers return to Cintas Center against the Memphis Tigers next Tuesday, February 26, at 7 PM.
