DAYTON, Ohio - Xavier's Josh Duncan, who tied his career high with 18 points in the game, could not help propel the Musketeers past the University of Dayton on Tuesday night at UD Arena. The Flyers took the contest by a final score of 66-62. The loss drops XU to 16-8 on the season and 7-6 in Atlantic 10 contests, while Dayton improves to 13-14 overall and 5-8 in conference action.

Seven field goals in the second half haunted the Musketeers as XU's field goal percentage stayed constant from 44 percent in the first half to 41.2 percent in the second half. Dayton's field goal percentage was 37.9 percent in the opening stanza to 46.4 percent in the second half including 75 percent from behind the arc.

Xavier started the second half with a scoreless drought over the first 4:24 of the period. Combined with the drought at the end of the first half, Xavier did not have a field goal over a 10:23 stretch but during that cold spell, XU was able to stay close with free throws as Xavier connected on seven of its 10 attempts over that time.

Both teams battled back and forth midway through the second half as fans saw five ties and five lead changes over a seven-minute stretch. Xavier would score four of its seven second-half field goal over that span.

With 4:25 remaining in the contest, Xavier knotted the score at 56-56 as Duncan nailed a three to tie his career high. Dayton would then score 10 of the next 16 points to seal the game.

The Musketeers started out the game firing the deep ball as five of the first six XU shots were from behind the arc. Out of the five 3-point attempts, Xavier connected on three of the five. Sophomore Stanley Burrell notched two of the long range hits to give the Musketeers the early 9-4 advantage.

A flurry of lead changes would follow as one tie and five lead changes would occur over a 2:51 span after the second media timeout of the first half. UD would hold its largest lead of three shortly after the spurt and post a score of 23-20 at the 8:33 mark.

Duncan provided eight of his 18 points in Xavier's 12-0 run that started with 8:28 remaining in the first half. XU was able to hold the Flyers scoreless over a 3:54 span and took its largest lead of the game of 32-23 with 5:05 remaining in the first half.

Dayton would make a 7-0 run over the last 5:05 of the half to close the gap to only two at halftime, 32-30. The Flyers also held the Musketeers without a field goal over the last 5:59 of the opening half.

Xavier was led on the boards by Justin Cage who caromed nine boards.  Dedrick Finn dished out a team-high six assists and had a team-high two steals.

Brian Roberts and Norman Plummer led the Dayton offense on the evening. Roberts tallied 14 points in the game and collected five assists with Plummer adding 15 points and seven rebounds.

Xavier still trails in the all-time series 80-61 but has won nine of the last 12 meetings.

XU will continue its road stretch and return to the hardwood this coming Saturday night as the Musketeers will travel to Rhode Island. Tip-off is set for 7:00 pm at the Ryan Center on the URI campus. XU is currently 11-2 all-time versus the Rams and 4-2 at the Ryan Center.
