Crawford Leads Musketeers With 23 As XU Defeats Charlotte 81-67

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Xavier sophomore Jordan Crawford led the way with 23 points as the Musketeers picked up a crucial Atlantic 10 road win by defeating Charlotte 81-67 Saturday afternoon at Halton Arena. With the win, the Musketeers improve to 19-7 overall and 10-2 in the A-10. Charlotte, meanwhile fell to 18-8 and 8-4 in the conference.
Crawford's 23 points came on an 8-of-15 shooting performance including 3-of-8 from behind the 3-point line. Junior Jamel McLean was second in scoring for the Musketeers with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Derrio Green led the 49ers and tied Crawford in scoring with 23 points of his own on 6-of-17 from the field. Shamari Spears was second in scoring for the Niners with 13 points.
Xavier got on the board first with a 3-pointer by Holloway but the 49ers rallied for a 10-4 run in the early going.
The game was tight for most of the first half with neither team able to pull away until Kenny Frease hit a jump shot at the 3:39 mark to give the Musketeers a 26-16 lead. XU managed to hold off Charlotte for the remainder of the first period and headed into the locker room leading 31-22.
In the second half, the Musketeers kept up the pace. Crawford hit two straight baskets at the 16:09 and 15:36 mark to put the score at 41-29 in favor of XU.
The Xavier defense held firm as XU pulled away for the win.
Transition scoring proved to be key for the Musketeers. XU out-paced Charlotte 18-8 in fast break scoring. Xavier's bigs also had a big night as the Musketeers out-scored Charlotte in the paint 36-26.
The battle of the boards was close as Xavier managed to out rebound the Niners 38-32. Overall, Xavier shot 52 percent on the night while Charlotte hit 36.5 percent on the day.
Xavier will remain on the road for an Atlantic 10 matchup with Saint Louis, Wednesday, February 24. Tip time is set for 8 p.m. and the game will be televised on Fox Sports Ohio.
