CINCINNATI - Juniors Justin Cage and Justin Doellman each recorded double-doubles and sophomore Stanley Burrell scored 21 first-half points to lead the Xavier University men's basketball team to an 84-64 victory on Wednesday evening at Cintas Center. With the win, XU improves to 15-7 on the year and 6-5 in Atlantic 10 play. Fordham slips to 12-12 overall, 7-4 in the loop.
Cage tied his career highs in points and rebounds with 19 and 11 respectively. His 19 points came on 7-of-8 shooting and he was a perfect 5-of-5 from the charity stripe. Doellman scored 15 points and snared 10 rebounds on the night. He was a spotless 7-of-7 from the free throw line and dropped a team-high five dimes.
Xavier posted a pair of double doubles for the first time since March 28, 2004 when the Musketeers faced Duke in the NCAA Tournament Atlanta Regional Final.
Burrell was outstanding in the first half, scoring 21 points on 6-of-11 shooting. Burrell also put together a 5-of-7 effort from beyond the 3-point arc in the first stanza. Burrell was held scoreless for the remainder of the game though and finished the contest with five rebounds.
Cage and Doellman were solid in the second half as the dynamic duo recorded all but two of XU's field goals in the game's final 20 minutes.
Freshman B.J. Raymond had XU's other two second-half field goals. Raymond chipped in with a career-high 12 points and also snatched five rebounds on the night.
Sophomore Josh Duncan was the fifth Musketeer in double-figures with 10 points. He also hauled in seven rebounds and dished-out three assists.
Xavier extended its 48-34 halftime lead to a 58-40 advantage when Cage converted on a put-back with 17-minutes remaining in regulation. Fordham would not go away though and put together a 14-4 run over the next 5:40 to shrink the XU lead to single-digits, 62-54, at the 11:20 mark.
That was as close as Fordham would get though as Doellman and Cage keyed a decisive 14-3 run that put the Musketeers up 75-57 at the 3:50 mark. Doellman capped the spurt with an old-fashioned 3-point play.
Xavier out-rebounded the Rams 41-to-35 and held a 30-to-19 advantage on the defensive glass. The Musketeers also held a 34-to-24 edge in points in the paint.
XU was a sizzling 92.6 percent (25-of-27) from the free throw line.
Fordham jumped out to a 5-0 lead in game's first minute but the Musketeers answered with a 7-0 over the next 1:50 to regain the lead.
The lead would change hands four more times but XU took the lead for good at the 13:30 mark when Burrell nailed one of this five first-half 3-pointers, giving Xavier a 17-15 lead at the 13:30 mark.
The Musketeers would be unable to pull away until they mounted a 14-2 run over the final 4:40 of the first session to take a commanding 48-34 lead into the locker room.
The Musketeers are back in action on Saturday, February 18 when the team welcomes Duquesne to Cintas Center. Game time is set for 12:00 p.m. and the contest will be televised regionally by FSN Ohio.
